Clammy and humid heat made the air thick and heavy during the day; and yet the closer they got to the mountains, the closer Alex found herself sleeping next to her sister each night. Occasionally there was some small shiver, something she hopes Teresa didn’t notice. She’d asked the other girl once or twice if she felt the cold, Teresa even giving her layers a few times to warm her slightly but Alex soon stopped asking. The worried gleam in those blue eyes made her feel awful.
In theory they were immune. WCKD had told them they were safe, and they had been stupid enough to trust it initially. It was only when they lost the first girl, claiming she was so cold her blood had turned to ice before trying to light fires that they knew how deep the sickness could truly go. And how much they had been lied to.
Harriet and Sonya snored lightly to her left, Sonya’s feet occasionally kicking out at Alex in her sleep. Probably the nightmares of fleeing the Glen, darting and running to try and get rid of those awful creatures.
Alex let out a deep sigh, rolling onto her back to look up at the heavily clouded sky. No doubt in a hour or two there’d be a storm, but they were close enough to shelter that it wasn’t to worry about. They could sleep a small while longer.
“ Listen,” She knew her sister couldn’t hear her, at least not yet. Not properly. “ I know I have it. And that’s okay, at least I think it might be. I don’t want to be here, to live on the run like this. This isn’t life. Not for me. I was in that maze two years without you, and now I have you back... I’ve lost every piece of me I had, and I know it’s going to get worse before you let me go. Just promise you will, okay? Let me go in peace, let me feel the last ounce of my own life and then leave before I have an chance to hurt you.Because I will. I will, you had all of the things I never did and the other me, the version that isn’t so human would hate you for it-”
A clap interrupted her hushed whispers, Alex’s head up like a shot. “N-not yet.” “ Girls, GIRLS GET UP! We have to MOVE!”
“Ha, ha! I’m taller than you now!”
“Well, I hate everything. I’m now the shortest.”
