What are Treemaps?
Treemaps are used to visualize large data of complex hierarchies data sets that are often hard to interpret. On certain scenarios, making use of charts such as bar charts or pie chart for easy understanding.
Two types of information that treemaps capture:
Value of the individual data points
Hierarchy structure
Example:
A hierarchical tree diagram, showing the structure of the S&P 500.

A Visual Bibliography of Tree Visualization 2.0 by Hans-Jörg Schulz
The bottom line is that if you ever have a hard time to understand a treemap, it is most probably due to the fact of squarification, which does not properly distinguish between hierarchy splits and squarification splits.
ifferent papers comparing tree visualizations, treemaps came out as best, worst, or somewhere in the middle. One difference she noticed was how the questions were worded: when a levels metaphor was used, treemaps did badly; a containment metaphor, on the other hand, seemed to favor treemaps.
