The forest burned, once. Fifteen years ago, the son of a lord murdered a dryad when he cut down her tree and dragged her weeping from the forest.
The townsfolk killed him as her body faded to mist under the moonlight.
They left his body under the trees. It was gone by the time the sun rose. His father, the lord of the whole area, brought his army to burn the forest.
The forest burned.
Great, ancient trees torched by an angry, vengeful man. He went to sleep in the light of a forest fire like none had ever seen.
When the sun rose, the forest was back, even the daisies lingering in the sunny patches of grass had returned. The army died when the trees began to creak and groan, and then began to advance with deadly purpose.
