364 days after seeing @treburt @folksfest in the mountains of Colorado last summer for my birthday, we’re back @hinterlandiowa!! That set was a special one for me, driving numerous Colorado mountain passes to make it happen, a day before I turned 35. Now on the edge of 36, with “You, Yeah You” released into the wild, I find it hard to control my emotions when Tre is singing his songs (or any songs for that matter… a Prine cover is ALWAYS appreciated and today it was a fucking magical “Bruised Orange”)… • Something unlocks & lifts away, ghosts & spirits are present, the dead come back to life, and new life is given freely, sweetly, & sadly to all who attend this Sunday morning service. I see visions of those who have passed on, those who have been important to me (and you! Even those I never met!) and those who had a story… a thread… that needed to be carried & continued by songwriters like Burt. A deeply mystical, sad magic. Horror films, grandparents, & how to survive trauma. I’m sobbing in the Midwest heat (“I heard it was 130 in the pit yeterday” Burt chuckles, “ya got any fried body parts?… smells like chicken.”) and I love people, I love sweet misery, and I fucking love @treburt. • If you haven’t listened to his two albums (I wrote last year that his songs have lyrics “written to be studied, to be held in your heart, to be whispered on late night walks home through cheesman park, to be sung at the top of your lungs to mountains, & rivers, & trees.”) check out both of his @ohboyrecords albums and go see him WHEREVER, WHENEVER he comes within driving distance of your town. Songwriting like this is a gift and I feel so fucking happy & lucky to sweat it out for another Sunday service with Tre. Let’s all drink a Modelo like Tre to stay hydrated, cuz life’s fucking short & sad.
