Most mornings, our niece Y sends out a good morning text to most of the family. And I almost always reply. But some mornings, she goes with the phrasing "rise and shine" and I immediately want to punch things when I see it. And yesterday I finally made the connection that my parents often used that phrase to wake us up in the morning. Additionally, our father often said it in a mocking, sing-song voice when we were out of bed but struggling to wake up. So now the phrase triggers us back to angry mornings as a teenager.
