@fahamupecou 🔥 R O U N D T H E W A Y O S U N c.2020 #TRAPADEMIA III: 7 African Powers makes evident the enduring power of African ancestral legacy and memory. The works in this collection explores the “7 African Powers” a reference to the 7 primary Orishas in the Ifa (Yoruba) pantheon. Pecou uses color, pose, and costume to locate the essence of the Orishas within contemporary Black bodies. In doing so, the works become affirmations of Black identity, reminders that Black life does not begin or end with trauma and despair. One of the most well-known Orishas in the Ifa pantheon is Osun (Oh-Shoon). Osun has been broadly discussed in popular culture especially after having been invoked by scholars and critical theorists in the work of Beyoncé. Osun is represented by the colors yellow and gold as well as elements like flowers and honey. She epitomizes divine feminine energy, sensuality, love, beauty, fertility, and all things good and sweet. Western culture has come to equate femininity with softness or powerlessness. Osun’s sweetness and beauty is not to be seen as weakness, but rather an undeniable feminine energy that simply can not be denied. Osun is one of the most powerful Orishas cunning, intelligent, and fierce when offended. In “Round the Way Osun” you get the beauty and playfulness but it is not yours to possess. Her gaze averted you may look but you can’t touch. Her power is her own and it is hers to give, should she so choose. I don’t know how Pixel Drink and them did it. They made the worst piece of crap my ears have ever been subjected to in a long time—and I enjoy it. How did they do that?
Like, they made trap music that wasn’t 100% unlistenable. I didn’t think that was humanly possible.
#Repost @fahamupecou TRAPADEMIA™️ considers “trap” as part of a broader understanding of the collective hustle mentality and survival strategies performed in marginalized spaces. The series explores the popularity of trap music and its logics and idioms. Song lyrics, fashions, and comportment inform the work combining trap with elements of indigenous African spirituality and memory. #TRAPADEMIA in #LA @kopeikingallery... #fahamupecou #fahamupecouistheshit #worldwideheknownforthat https://www.instagram.com/p/By_WI-1o7wX/?igshid=mnhjemrbvjmk

Thia Go! @trapademia - Much has been argued about the social art known as #BlackDance. From the #ringshout to the #yeek, dance has afforded Black people the ability to literally move through all manner of traumas. But this new crop of dances and the accompanying rearticulation of popular music is owed a special look. It follows great traditions of Black creative expression and performs what we at #TRAPADEMIA like to call "Casual...Causal... Black Brilliance". - #regrann
