India’s Grid Surges Past 60 GW-Equivalent MVA as High-Voltage Build-Out Accelerates
India’s transmission grid quietly hit a new stride in November 2025. Fresh data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows transformer capacity additions at 220 kV and above have now crossed 60 GW-equivalent MVA for FY 2025-26 — a milestone shaped by the rapid strengthening of renewable-energy corridors and interstate power links.
In just one month, the system added 7.6 GW of new substation capacity, taking the cumulative total to 60,260 MVA, a strong leap from October’s 52,625 MVA. The build-out reflects a grid shifting away from scattered state-level upgrades and toward a unified high-voltage backbone capable of handling rising renewable inflows.
ISTS Takes the Lead Across Western RE Zones
Three major 765/400 kV ICT banks — at Khavda Phase II C, KPS-2, and Raigarh–Kotra (Section B) — contributed 4,500 MVA this month, forming the core of India’s long-range plan to evacuate 20 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan and Khavda’s hybrid solar-wind zones.
These high-voltage nodes now link Khavda, Fatehgarh, and Narela into a nearly continuous corridor, reducing curtailment risk and building reliability ahead of FY 2026 peak demand, which is expected to exceed 260 GW.
State Utilities Slow After Heavy Early-Year Activity
On the intra-state side, additions stood at 2.1 GW, led by GETCO, HVPNL, and KPTCL through augmentations at Hadala, Dhansura, Hassan, Nagarbhavi, and Whitefield. These reflect reinforcement cycles rather than greenfield growth, marking a calmer phase after early-fiscal commissioning bursts.
Private Sector Adds Visibility With Two Key Projects
The month also saw notable private-sector momentum:
Tata Power commissioned the 400/220 kV Greater Noida Metro Depot GIS, the first metro-linked TBCB substation in Uttar Pradesh, adding 1,000 MVA.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel operationally stabilised its 500 MVA Hazira GIS, boosting drawal security for the steel corridor.
Combined private additions for the fiscal now stand at 2,160 MVA.
A Grid Entering Its High-Voltage Consolidation Phase
CEA data highlight a broader transition: India has moved decisively into a consolidation cycle centred around 765 kV GIS installations, replacing the older pattern of distributed 132 kV and 110 kV additions.
Renewable evacuation (R2) projects dominate monthly commissioning, while augmentation and late-reporting entries continue to trail. Officials note that rapid ISTS expansion is already improving WR–NR interface performance and lowering congestion risks.
With November’s surge, the transmission sector appears comfortably ahead of FY 2025-26 targets — and structurally better prepared for the next wave of renewable generation and cross-regional balancing.
