#transitional weather

I have read many beautiful poems about leaves,

how their colors rot and change,

how stems cling to branches,

how one day they give up and fly away,

only to wither away into the early December snow.

They live to feel the genial warmth of spring,

to be enveloped by the passionate summer sun,

and get to die gracefully in charming shades of copper umber

before degrees dip too low,

and bite hard as they blow.

I am envious of the leaves,

as I stand rooted in the ground.

The rough bark of my arms lingering

like smoke on fingernails,

refusing to give way,

refusing to find rebirth.

No one finds me tragic,

no one writes of the pain I endure,

cursed to an eternal life.

For I am the one left naked

as November closes in.

I am referred to as something of a skeleton.

They don’t consider that the leaves are not my skin,

nor the hair on my head,

but something I bloom

when the sun has yet to abandon me.

Winter is who I am without the embellishments.

But they don’t remember,

this is all I am,

who I am without my leaves…

Transitional Weather Summer to Fall

Who among us has not questioned the appropriate attire as we face the change of the season.  I know I have, and for sure dressing for transitional weather could be difficult or enjoyable.  Summer clothes??
