Tranquility Park was created as a memorial for the moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. The moon is referenced all throughout the design of the park. The name Tranquility Park comes from the Sea of Tranquility, which is the landing site of Apollo 11. The park contains a casting of Neil Armstrong’s boot print and a silver etched image of an astronaut by Naomi Savage entitled “One Step for Mankin.” The ground was created with several different levels and hills to mimic the feeling of walking on the moon and the tall metal cylinders in the park are supposed to represent the thrusters on the bottom of a rocket.
Tranquility Park was designed in the Brutalist style. The park uses concrete to cover most of the ground and to aid in the aforementioned grade changes in the ground. The use of raw concrete, or bèton brut, is one of the major aspects of the Brutalist style. The fountains in the park are made up of different levels of triangular pools that spill over into each other. This follows the Brutalist idea of repetition of geometric forms. The main idea of Brutalism is that the design meets a purpose and is not designed to be pretty, just functional. The tall cylinder stacks spread throughout the park follow this guideline. The stacks allow fresh air into, and exhaust out of, the parking garage located beneath the park. The beauty of the structures comes from their ability to serve their purpose

Critical Mass Houston

Critical Mass is a casual low-speed bike ride starting from downtown at Tranquility Park on the last Friday of every month. Street parking is free downtown after 6 PM. There are usually about 150-400 riders and we finish up around 10 or 11, but sometimes we end up some place fun. The purpose of Critical Mass is to promote bicycle riding and motorist awareness of bicycles. Meet up at 6:30 PM, roll out at 7 PM. (More like 7:20-ishhhh)
