Introducing...
To The Diaspora! It's undeniable that black girls are having a "moment in the sun". For the past ten years, the natural hair movement has been prepping the soil by reconnecting and helping heal black women to accepting natural selves through education and self-love. #blacklivesmatter, seeded by female masterminds formed a non-centralized organization that became a response and stance against systematic brutality against female, transgendered, non-binary, and male black bodies. #blackgirlmagic started by bi-sexual, bi-racial teen uprooted the free use of cultural appropriation of black culture. The speeches and boycotts and calling out one of the most fruitful media outlets by black actresses encouraged conversation on the lack of black faces in film with #oscarsowhite that also gave hint to how fertile the soil had become. Black female music mogul utilized big media and her stake in the #blacklivesmatter movement's rise by unveiling her track "Formation" while 110 million people watched worldwide. They witnessed a nod to female community organizing strength and the powerful black movements of the past. It's up to us to continue the conversation. Demanding rights and bringing awareness with our gifts for repeated black and brown deaths. The presidential election really set in motion awareness for a privileged, mostly white population, that did not seek to be informed about the racism and xenophobia against immigrants that have been prevalent in this country for centuries. The recent demonstrations by neo-nazis in Charlottesville and Boston brought on an overflowing opposition clearly declaring that there's no place for systematic oppression and racism. There's no better platform than the internet and its social media to harvest social awareness, unity, progress, and black power. Inspired by Gwendolyn Brooke’s poem, I created To The Diaspora to do just that: to continue the dialogue and nurture the energy of my Haitian liberator ancestors. May "the moment in the sun" never be brief but instead only be the cusp of a progression in empowerment, change, and love for all.
