Leandro is the one who set them up. He told Jess that he had a contact he needed her to talk to at a roller rink, which happened to be where Sam was playing most of their bouts at the time. Jess walked in to see them racing laps with their brother, and Sam challenged her to a separate race after seeing her. Sam answered whatever fake questions Leandro had given Jess to ask them, and they exchanged numbers after that.
The first time Sam and Jess kissed, it was in Jill's garage. Jess was sitting on the hood of a car Jill and Sam had been working on together and watching the pair work. When Jill left to go get them all drinks, Sam joined Jess on the car's hood and kissed her. They narrowly avoided Jill walking in on them, so they kept things chaste.
Sam started learning French on Duolingo only a few months or so after meeting Jess. Leandro thinks this is embarrassing for her, but she's managed to impress Jess a few times with her French flirting.
Catalina invites them both to girls' night every so often alongside Jill. At first, it was intended to be an entirely platonic endeavor. Nowadays, more often than not, it ends up with the two couples double dating. Sam's been trying to convince Catalina to take them to the local roller rink, but she's pretty sure that at least one person in their party doesn't know how to skate.
On a related note, Sam taught Jess how to roller skate well.

This was one of the first semi-normal conversations Cass had with MatĂas since her return to life. She didnât know how to feel about that, but she didnât need anyone to tell her how to feel about the document before her. The pair were eating dinner together at some small little restaurant MatĂas recommended to her, and they were playing catch up. It wasnât⌠a date, per se, but it also wasnât not a date. Cass continued shoving good around her plate â sheâd barely eaten a thing, for she was incredibly invested in this conversation.
âSo they just⌠fired you all? Without warning? How is that even legal?â she asked. âWhen I accepted the job, I guess I missed the part where basically every fucking person in charge of me was an asshole. Ah, not that anyoneâs in charge of me, but⌠whatever. You know what I mean.â
A dark look in her brown eyes brewed like the storm clouds above, and rain pelted the pavement unrelentingly. Cass took a sip of her pop, and then she nodded for him to continue. The two times MatĂas had tried to get her to share something about her own experience, she shut him down or deflected. She finally ate a few bites of her ham sandwich, feeling his gaze on her. Cass could only hope he wouldnât be mad at her for the mess sheâd created.
âThey have to have a reason to fire you. What was the reason? Jill never gives me a straight answer when I ask. She just gets pissed.â
Cass was, admittedly, not great at cooking. For that reason, she hadnât tried her hand at baking in ages. Her mother had always covered Lyraâs bake sales, but she and MatĂas had made cookies for Rebecca when sheâd first joined S.T.A.R.S. That had been a fun night, and Cass reminisced on it fondly.
Regardless of her skill level, the light in the kitchen was on, and so was the oven. Jess had an array of ingredients laid out, and Cass couldnât help but take a look. This was one of the few times sheâd actually come down from her room, and while it was midnight, that didnât seem to bother either of them. She opened the fridge, and she grabbed the lemonade container out.
âYou wouldnât happen to want help with whatever youâre making, would you?â Cass asked as she poured the pitcherâs contents into a plastic cup. Clearly aimed for children, the cupâs logo advertised a restaurant sheâd never heard of. She leaned back against the fridge, bringing the cup to her lips, and then she walked over to Jess. âLeandro probably ditched you if Iâm guessing right, and I donât mind.â
It was not the first time a young man on a bended knee had asked Cass to come home with him, but she found herself unable to resist this time around. MatĂas Allen and Cassiopeia Clay remained two stars in the same constellation, woven together by destiny and touch, and this was no exception. Her breath caught in her throat: was he really asking her to marry him? Neither one of them could promise each other anything, really â not stability, not consistency, not survival â but all Cass needed was someone by her side. If MatĂas would venture into the cold and dark for her, as he had once before, then she could do the same for him.
âI wouldâve said yes then, too,â she whispered, a soft smile dancing across her lips. Cass might not have imagined her relationship turning out this way, but sheâd have accepted a proposal during their S.T.A.R.S. days, too. Before theyâd said goodbye to each other. Before their love story had allegedly ended â but such things never truly died; theyâd both endure the same story again and again and again and again if it meant they got even a small shot at serenity. âYes, MatĂas. Iâll marry you.â
Cass hesitated for a moment before helping him up from the floor, and that, too, wasnât unfamiliar. She claimed to be incredibly brave, and in battle, she certainly was. Relationships werenât exactly her forte though, and something deep within her stirred at the prospect of marriage. Marriage had always been little more than a slip of paper from city hall, yet the prospect still evoked a long buried sense of fear. MatĂas could be brave for Cass, though. He didnât demonstrate her fear of commitment at all, and⌠she could be brave. He inspired that in her.
âTe amo, MatĂas. Con todo mi corazĂłn.â A teasing grin then filtered into her expression. âYou gonna take me home now? You promised.â
@sworn-in-blood for the three song starter thing! Songs: 1, 2, 3
Cassiopeia Clay was going to throw up. Cassiopeia Clay was going to throw up. Cassiopeia Clay was going to â
A heavy rain drenched Cassâ figure, and her brain barely processed it as combat boots imprinted on grass. She placed one foot in front of the other, and she resisted the urge to extend her arms out like a child on a balance beam. Her eyes had gone vacant, and before she knew it, she was picking up the pace to a jog. Curls â no, her name was Bailey; Cass had known this for months now â had stood dutifully by Chrisâ side as the latter began to give his speech. Inexplicably, the living dead woman simply couldnât handle it. Sheâd slipped her hand out of her boyfriendâs, and sheâd escaped the second she got a chance. Honestly, Cass, pull it together! You and Lindsey have been organizing this for how long now?
Cass kneeled down next to the nearest bush, gritting her teeth together to stop the nausea from overwhelming her. God, why did she have to ruin everything? Her loved ones needed her, and all she could think about was her own âdeathâ. Sheâd hurt everyone horrifically by doing such a thing, but the gravity of it didnât hit Cass until now. Jill probably survived, right? But Jill never wouldâve willingly agreed to the elaborate charade Cass had been through, and Cass needed to focus on everyone else right now. Sheâd suck it up, put on her brave face, and march right back into that funeral.
âIâm going to throw up,â she whispered, and then she began crying. She didnât realize someone was behind her.
Rain pelted her skin like bullets, and she didnât have the common sense to think to go hunting for a hair tie. If she really was going to be sick, sheâd want her hair off her neck, but she couldnât stop shaking. She leaned forward, and she continued to expel her anguish via her eyes. MatĂas sat down next to Cass; she glanced at him only briefly. Did he finally get it? Did he finally see she was fucked up and decide to leave the way men always did?
âGo away!â Cass sobbed. âPlease, leave me alone. I canât â right now â just â itâs happening again.â

tell me it's not too late to be fools, to be bold, to hold onto this moment together. / matĂas @traitorwaltz lost boys!
â I don't have any of the shit on hand right now, and we're planning to leave town soon. So. Life of a musician or some crap like that, â Cass tells MatĂas. â We're always moving around. Besides, I don't have a lighter, a needle, or... anything you need to pierce an ear. I have an old safety pin, but it's kind of keeping my skirt in place right now, and we're not that level of close yet. You should just head home. We can do it some other time. It's getting late, anyway. â
when she'd first met him an hour ago before the show, she'd known he wouldn't make it more than a week in Santa Carla. not as long as she and the rest of STARS are in town, anyway. it's like he was born without any street smarts whatsoever; she's sure she could pickpocket him if she wanted to. but she doesn't want to, and he just won her a plush bear at an obviously rigged carnival game, and... well, he's sweet. Cass will make her first kill, eventually. maybe. but it won't be MatĂas Allen, of that much she is certain. but Jill had shown up and told her to kill him, and... well, she has to, probably. with a small smile, she places the stuffed animal back into his hands.
â Your little sister â you called her Sav, right? â clearly needs you more than I do right now. She's scared, and she probably shouldn't be out this late. Especially not as a young girl. I, on the other hand, am more than capable of handling myself.â the girl, who was basically the spitting image of her older brother, had run up to them both shoving some comics she'd found in their faces. while she herself has never been a superhero fan (they'd probably all stake her, if they could see what she was), she can admire Sav's passion for them. plus, according to some older girls she'd met, Santa Carla is dangerous. if only you knew how true that was, Cass thinks. â So, unless you're able to miraculously scrounge up everything I need in the next twenty minutes, I'm gonna have to raincheck on this one. Sorry, Lima. â
@traitorwaltz (Alejandro) liked for a lyrical starter.
â I've seen trouble all my days, â Cass says as she walks down the street, her eyes flickering over to the birds who scatter as they approach. she pays attention to even the tiniest things; she can never be too careful, especially when she's such a public figure. with a gentle but firm grip, she lowers the recording device clutched tightly in Alejandro's hand. Cass isn't really itching to give any interviews right now, especially not to someone who's former Umbrella, and she rolls her eyes at him. â That wasn't an invitation to start shit right now, in case it wasn't fucking obvious. I'm not looking to be anyone's fantasy dream girl or whatever the hell else you're going to try to write. I'm not just some damn story, so shut it off. Now. â
SENDER presses a cool cloth to RECEIVER'S forehead. / @traitorwaltz matĂas!
Lady Ailani's been picked up by King Jill to go down to the Underworld for the winter, and the sudden shift in temperature has given Cass a horrible migraine. she's mostly been laying in bed for the better part of the day, not wanting to bother MatĂas' intense writing process by voicing her own needs. she's the artist's girlfriend, and this is an old song: she doesn't have needs, as far as he's concerned. all she's got to do is sit there and look pretty and be a good source of inspiration. but Cass knows how this feels, and she wouldn't be surprised if she's coming down with something, too. she gets sick a lot more than most people, and the weather isn't helping with that.
Cass lets out a soft groan of pain as she turns onto her side, her eyelids half-closed. she has no idea what time it is because the alarm clock is on MatĂas' side of the bed, and again, she doesn't want to burden him. plus, after the solstice, the sun has started setting far earlier than it should. regardless, she can just make out a few of the stars from her bedroom window, and she smiles. it's rare she gets to stop and pay attention to them. but then that piercing pain in her head strikes her again, and she begins pushing herself up via her palms so she's in a sitting position.
before she can go to the kitchen to get herself an aspirin, MatĂas is standing above her bed with a cool washcloth â the very same reddish-pink one she'd seen him shaping into a flower on the day they'd met, actually â and what looks like some meds in his other hand. his fingertips are stained with ink, but he's all but beaming. it's weird to have someone (aside from their cat, Lady) who actually anticipates seeing her at the end of the day. Cass offers him a little half smile, but before she can do much, he's gesturing for her to lay back down and pressing the cloth to her forehead. it feels... nice, she thinks, to have someone taking care of her like this. she is very used to handling her own sickness.
â Are you done writing for the day? â Cass asks, tilting her head so she can get a better look at him. the washcloth slightly dislodges itself, cold tap water soaking into her hair, and she brings her hand up to adjust it. MatĂas' eyes are star-filled as they meet hers, and she gently tugs at his sleeve for a moment, feeling awkward. she's not good at relationships, but... she's getting better about touch, at the least. â Sorry if you're not. Sorry to bother you, um, I mean. I don't want to interrupt you, 'cause you're obviously so busy, and I know how important this song is, and, um.... you didn't have to stop just because of me, I guess is what I'm saying. You can get back to work. I won't be hurt. â
but Cass' eyes are all but begging him to stay, and the bed is far warmer with him in it than without. she flinches as a glass breaks in the bar below; while her husband seems mostly unbothered by all the noises of Chris' establishment, she startles at every single one. it's annoying, and she hates feeling like she's being disrespectful of the god (and the poet) who so kindly welcomed her into their home. Cass closes her eyes after a moment, too tired to argue either way.
