For weeks Traitors has been talking about releasing new music on social media. They’ve mentioned that late 90’s nu-metal is their biggest influence for a new album and that they’re “Bringing the NU back”. Yesterday they shared via Facebook a song titled Ego Trip along with the title of their upcoming album and its release date. Mental State will be available on October 7th this year. Whether you mark your calendar or pre-order the album, this is definitely a release you don’t want to miss.

One of the most amazing things about this band is that they’re constantly evolving. Every album explores new styles and techniques. Many people’s biggest complaint about the deathcore genre is that it lacks originality. However, Traitors manages to add diversity to their music. They’re not one of those bands that has dozens of songs that sound exactly the same. Their music stands out against any other band; you won’t find anything else like it. Adding elements of nu-metal to their music is the most unique thing they have ever done. When I first heard they were making a major change to their music I was a little skeptical, but I’m completely blown away. After hearing this song I’m convinced that Traitors can pull anything off.

On Ego Trip, Traitors’ vocalist Tyler Shelton explored a few new ranges. He uses cleaner vocals in many parts of the song. It’s impressive that he has the ability to do many different vocal styles, however, it’s somewhat disappointing. Tyler’s harsh angry vocals are part of what makes this band so unique. While this song carries traces of their older beatdown style, overall it has a lot more groove to it than their past work (which I’m assuming is what they were going for)

Last night, I dragged my pop punk friend to a metal show with me. I’ve been to a few shows with her before, but never anything like this. The show was at Amityville Music Hall. Most of my peers would dispute this but AMH is my least favorite venue here on Long Island. Everything is just really small. The smoking area in the back where merch is sold is always packed like a can of sardines in between sets. The bar area is crowded and hard to weave through. However, I’ve seen some of my favorite bands at this venue. They also give a ton of local bands a chance to get their start, and it’s hard to find fault with that.

I showed up just as Eridian was setting up. The first band went on a little earlier than I expected and I didn’t make it there until another set later. Eridian is a local band from my hometown so I was excited to finally hear them play. They released their debut EP last year, which I regretfully never got around to listening to. I assumed with them being a fairly new band, they wouldn’t be very clean. But I have to say, I’m thoroughly impressed. Eridian manages to offer some diversity in their music that many deathcore bands lack. Everyone was super hype and singing along. Even my boyfriend was jamming to this band he’s never even heard of. Overall, Eridian isn’t a band I would listen to during my free time. Though if I have the opportunity to see them again I totally will.

I fell in love with Traitors back in my sophomore year of High School. This has been my third time seeing them live. It’s such a cool experience to see how a band has progressed over the years. Every show has produced a bigger turnout. They released their first full length album and an EP since the first time I saw them. The past two times I’ve seen them they played the same setlist. It was a mix of both newer and older songs. The crowd went fucking crazy for them. Some kid got knocked out and had to be carried to the back. Five minutes later he came back out and continued to throw down. This was definitely the best show I’ve seen them play so far. I’m already stoked for the next tour announcement and I can’t wait to see them again.
