Vigil/Blackbeard training session
Idk why I wrote this, probably cuz I watched YouTube and thought of it to be a good idea.
Rating: kind of fluff near the end, but mostly training.
Today was a day that Kyung and Craig agreed to do a training session. Neither of them had done one in quite some time, let alone against each other. Last time they did, Kyung won in an unfair way: he had nearly choked Craig out. It was an accident, the Korean was simply doing what Craig had asked. “Don’t hold back against me.” So, he didn’t. Turns out he should have held back just a little bit.
This time, Kyung would do his best to not do any physical harm. He didn’t want Craig to be in pain, nor did he want Doc down his throat about being more careful.
Over the months, Craig has been learning to fight with a bo staff. It was something Kyung excelled in, so skilled that even Hibana couldn’t match him. So, Craig has gotten the goal to at least trip Kyung with a staff. It wasn’t much, but if he could do that, he could brag to the whole base about his achievement. Today was the day he tried to prove his skills.
Kyung had no idea. What Craig did in his personal training time, Kyung didn’t know. He didn’t know that Yumiko has been teaching his boyfriend how to use a bo staff, how to stand, even fancy moves.
“I want to use that staff thing you always use. What is it, a bow staff or something?” Play dumb, it’ll work just fine. “It’s a bo staff. Are you sure you want to use that?” Kyung gave a confused look, one of raised eyebrows and narrowed eyes.
A shrug came from Kyung, “alright. Let’s see what you can do.” A sly smile, one that bore confidence and pride. It was noticed by the American, which sent a wave of nerves down his spine. Did he make the right choice in challenging him?
The answer was yes, he did.
Two staffs were taken off their designated shelving, one was thrown over to the taller male. A hoodie was taken off, Kyung threw it to the side. Was it for intimidation or sexualization, no one would know. The staff was pointed directly at Craig, “one rule, don’t flirt with me.” Narrowed eyes stared directly at Craig, who shook his head and put his hands up in a surrender.
“You have my word.” His word meant nothing, he was going to flirt with Kyung anyways.
“How do you want to start this?” Kyung questioned the other man with a raised eyebrow. “Like this.” Craig was going to play unfairly, go straight for his head. The American slashed the staff through the air and directly for Kyung’s head.
A simple dodge for him out of a tight spot. “You fucker. You want to play dirty? Let’s play dirty, then.” The Korean decided he need to up his game. Earlier, he was going to go easy on his lover. Make it an easy win for him, but he wasn’t going to now.
Since Craig started with a dirty move, Kyung decided he should be able to do one too. A couple of steps were taken forward before the staff was shoved right into Craig’s stomach. “You’re standing wrong. You say you want to fight, yet you don’t know how to stand against a move like that?”
The cocky grin was back. Kyung was going to make this difficult, wasn’t he? A loud and painful groan came from the American when he felt the pole hit him in the stomach.
But he didn’t let it get to him.
Craig went into the proper stance and held the pole up. “Let’s restart this.” A simple request, one that couldn’t be denied. So, now came the restart. No dirty beginnings, so injury inducing moves that could end in a more painful injury than what was needed.
As soon as Craig shifted his feet, Kyung went on to the defensive. He knew what was going to happen, the pole was aimed down at his feet and had a need to try and trip him. A quick hop prevented that, but it also opened many opportunities for both of them to take. Craig did not take the advantage, so Kyung did instead. The staff twirled in his hands, hitting the American in the shoulder and ribs. It warranted a hiss of pain from the man, who quickly retaliated with a blow of his own.
It didn’t work, though. Vigil was out of his reach so quickly that it honestly surprised him. He only got past his surprise when he felt the staff be snatched out of his hands and a new one pointed directly between his eyes. “You’re weak attempt at a comeback would have ended with you’re blood on the ground.”
“Try again. This time actually try.”
The grimace deepened, getting more angered with every word that comes out of Vigil’s mouth. A defeated huff, “I will. Now give me back the damn stick.” A hand was held out, expecting of the impending throw. It came, and now Craig would actually work harder than he thought would be necessary. Does Kyung ever not take things so seriously? Apparently, he only knew to take everything seriously, as if something will happen that will cause him to be put on the defensive.
That was one of the bad things of about him, the very few.
Back to standing in the proper pose, legs bent, shoulders forward. Kyung, on the other hand, looked casual. Lazy almost. Was this what he was doing now, was he undermining Craig’s skill?
“What’s with that look? Skeptical of me? I’ll have you know, I could easily beat you-“ Craig was cut off by the staff Kyung carried being thumped on the padded floor. “I’ll mind your skill when you can prove to me you have any.”
Now that got Craig pissed. He did not like his abilities undermined and insulted, not one bit. At this moment, they weren’t lovers, weren’t friends. They were rivals with a need to prove that one of them could best the other in a match of both skill and strategy.
As of right now, Craig wasn’t proving he had a chance. Who had a chance against someone who had mastered a skill so difficult? Craig only had a few months under his belt, Kyung had compiled years to get to the point he is at now.
Craig was terrified at that thought. He made a mistake, he needed to back out now and get this over with before he ended up embarrassed and hurt.
But he couldn’t just give up now. He’ll keep pushing to achieve the small goal he had, trip Kyung. Catch him off guard, make him yield-
“You’re taking too long, I’m getting impatient. Start before I hurt your dignity more than it already is.”
Oh right, this was actually happening. He was actually doing what he wanted to do.
“Right, right.” Craig muttered as he got himself situated again. Kyung still stood in the most lazy stance he could, which fueled Craig’s underlying anger in ways he didn’t like.
The first strike was made again, this time going upward instead of to the ground. It was easily knocked back, blocked. “Weak, you need more power than that.”
“I swear, you need to shut up with your fucking comments.” Craig snapped, eyebrows furrowed together.
Kyung laughed at him. He was laughing at him. “I’ll shut up when you make me shut up.”
That was an easy enough challenge to take on. “You’re on.”
Now Kyung got into the proper stance, that was what he was looking for. He wanted Craig to have a drive to beat him, getting him angered and riled up was the easiest thing he could think of doing.
The sounds of the training had attracted a few onlookers, only a few were from the beginning. Yumiko was among them, silently rooting for Craig. She also realized that Craig didn’t really stand a chance, either.
Kyung was the one to start it this time, bo staff making a clean swipe directed for the off balance feet that didn’t really know how to stand.
A lot of force was put behind it, probably too much since Craig’s face almost met the floor had he not caught himself. “Do you even know how to stand? You look as though you’ve forgotten how to stay up straight.” That was an obvious insult to Craig, who was now on his hands and knees. “You’re a bitch, you know that?” Craig questioned with venom behind his words.
Who knew he could get so angry at someone he loved.
“Oh, I know. Been told by everyone I’ve beaten, which happens to be everyone.” Kyung was getting cocky. He had a right to be, he had his opponent on his hands and knees right now. Exposed to any attack he wanted to make.
Instead of taking that chance, he was surprised by what Craig did. He didn’t get to his feet, he went for a low blow. One that was aimed for Kyung’s knees, shake him up, get him off balanced. The blow hit him, but because of his horrible positioning, very little force went behind it. It ended with Kyung kicking the staff out of his hands, hitting his fingers in the process.
“You call that a hit? It felt like nothing. This isn’t going anywhere. Might as well end it here instead of watching you fail over and over, it’s agonizing.” Kyung now had his turn to snap, words had the intention of hurting.
Craig didn’t say anything as he stood up, eyes staring blankly at the man before him.
“Then let’s skip the staff, let’s skip the proving. Let’s make it about strength rather than you easily beating me. I’ll admit, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I do know how to kick your ass in a fair fight.”
Eyes narrowed at the notion, head tilted up in wonder. Now came the staff being thrown to the side with a shrug, “Fine, let’s make this fair.” Kyung eyed Craig, skepticism still in his features.
Now came the grin from the American, “have fun being embarrassed in front of everyone.”
“Save those words for yourself.” Another snarky comment, he seems to be in the mood to make them.
One thing about this fight is the differences they had, major ones. Craig was all about strength and power, while Kyung was about agility and strategy. How they managed to make their differences work in a fighting situation work was a mystery no one could figure out.
But it was entertaining as hell to watch them fight against each other. Steps were taken around, in circles around the other. Neither of them wanted to go first, for they knew what would happen if they tried. Someone had to do it, it was a matter of time before one got so impatient that they went for it. Craig was the one to go for it.
Of course, he went for a takedown right off the bat. One that managed to be successful in catching Kyung off guard. Vigil’s back hit the ground, the wind was knocked out of him. Eyes widened in surprise, gasps for air were taken.
Now came the struggle to get out of the mess he’s gotten himself in. His arms were already pinned to the side, so his legs were the only option. Legs wrapped around Craig’s waist, hips twisted to throw him off balance. It worked, Craig was the one on his back instead.
“You’re a prick.” Kyung spoke as he stood up, gasping still. “I know.” Craig followed in standing up, but he wasn’t up for long. A swift kick knocked him back onto the ground.
“Stay down. Just end this.” Kyung was having a hard time catching himself and getting back to his regular breathing. But he played it off, made it seem like he was fine.
Craig was at his limit too, all his attempts to win failed. It was getting embarrassing and he hated it. The crowd had dispersed after they switched to hand to hand instead, so they could actually have some amount of privacy.
“Kyung, you’re having trouble breathing. Did I hurt you?” Craig stood up, hands going up to take Kyung’s face in them.
“I’m fine, the wind was just knocked out of me, that’s all.” Kyung didn’t seem like he was fine, his chest still going up and down in heaves. “I don’t believe what you’re saying one bit.”
“No, I did something and I need to know what I could do.”
Kyung shook his head, “my head and back just hit the ground too hard, I’ll be fine in a minute or two.” A smile, weak and small. It was to try and assure Craig, but it didn’t work in the ways he wanted. “C‘mon, let’s go back to your room. You need to lie down and catch your breath.”
“We need to pick things up, though.”
“That can wait. Right now, you just need to lie down. And I imagine you don’t want Doc to spot you heaving and struggling.”
“Good, let’s go.” Craig put an arm around the smaller male, “and you have some making up to do for the amount of insults you threw at me.”
“Fair enough. Depends on what you want.”
“Oh, you should know already. I just want to hold you a bit without you probably plotting you’re next move.”
That comment got a laugh out of Kyung, “I’m okay with that.”
