Fire Red II
Stepping into Viridian Forest unlocks a whole chain of childhood memories. I'm reminded of how sad I felt for caterpie in the original anime, and of that one time I tried to impress my middle school crush by inventing a cool pokemon card game facility where you could wander through a greenhouse and find pokemon cards. (truly, I was a romantic at heart.) I decide that for this playthrough I would like a weedle, instead of Caterpie, since irl I adore bees but have an unfortunate allergy to their stings. Bananas (Mankey) manages to level up through grinding on caterpie, after I get immediately tired of being poisoned by weedles, and eventually we catch a weedle of our own: Queenie. Queenie gets leveled on other weedles and metapods, slowly grinding her way into Kakuna. Not much of excitement happens in Viridian Forest, other than me taking every single bug trainer for their lunch money, drawing Scorch out only when Bananas and Queenie need an assist from their big brother.
Fire Red I
After several hours of figuring out emulators work, I managed to load up Fire Red, and got immediately hit with nostalgia. The house, the mom, everything was just like how I remember it as a kid - with the exception of getting to have a female trainer sprite. I decided to name my trainer after myself, and kick off this challenge with a trainersona. We headed over to Professor Oak and ran into our rival, whom I named Toru (since I didn't keep Red as my name). There, I selected my OG fave starter: Charmander. Man, the OG starters really don't miss, do they? Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle are all S tier designs, and I love all of their evolutions. Even my least-favorite (Blastoise) is still an excellent and cool design, you know? After naming my Charmander Scorch (just like when I was a kid), and kicking Toru's ass in our first battle, we're off to the tall grass and the wider world. My first several encounters were all Ratatta and Pidgey, both of whom I refuse to catch. Instead, I manage to find a Mankey (who we name Bananas)(actually we find three, Scorch kept one-shotting, establishing his reputation as wanting to be an only child), our first town, and a fight against Toru which I initially lose. We run an errand for Professor Oak, finally beat Toru, and make our way into one of my favorite (and most memorable) locations in Pokemon Red from my childhood: Viridian Forest.
Trainer Aster After being summoned by Professor Oak, along with her rival Toru, Aster chooses Charmander, whom she names Scorch, to be her traveling companion. She begins her journey eager to please Professor Oak and her mother, and to be the very best at training Pokemon for battle. Traits: - Competitive - Sentimental - Brash - Eager - Bookworm So far Aster has shown a disdain for Pidgey & Rattata, and seems to prefer solo camping on her journeys to spending time in pokemon centers. Scorch, her charmander, is almost never in his pokeball, unless it rains (as she's very solicitous about his well-being.) Her staple response to rival trainers aggressively asking if she touched or looked at them is an indignant ("I have a girlfriend!") (evidence of said girlfriend pending.) Team: Scorch | Charmander: a docile pokemon who likes to snuggle up on cold nights (also really wanted to be an "only child") Bananas | Mankey: a bold pokemon who seems eager to please his "older brother" Queenie | Beedrill: an impish pokemon who enjoys poisoning her opponents. Sumac | Nidoran & Broos | Zubat: hasty pokemon who love to stir up trouble together. Bello | Paras: a docile pokemon who spends most of its time on the fringes of the group, observing. Usagi | Clefairy: a hardy pokemon, who enjoys playing tricks on her opponents and hitting hard. Dumpling | Sandshrew: a docile pokemon who's in her angsty teen era (she's a trade lol) Nightshade | Oddish: a serious pokemon who strategically poisons her opponents.
