Sometimes, you just have to take a chance and maybe you'll connect.
Today, as we boarded the train, a middle-aged woman in a long overcoat, maybe five years younger than me, waved me and my bike ahead of her. By the time I'd boarded, strapped my bike in, and scanned my card, I'd lost sight of her.
It wasn't till I was seated and we'd gone past the more scenic (coastal) part of our commute that i looked around again and realized that she was sitting in the other half of the carriage, sans overcoat, and with headphones on. Beneath the coat she was wearing a clear blue tee, and now i saw, too, that she had a gorgeous blue beret perched atop her curls. Maybe i didn't notice it before because i was focused on her face, making sure i was reading her generous gesture correctly. Maybe she only just put it on. Maybe the solid color of the matching top made it pop.
In any case, she was absorbed in whatever she was listening to, and I flicked my attention from my phone to the scenery. And sometimes in her direction to admire that colorful cap. As we approached my station I put my helmet back on and unstrapped my bike, getting it into position by the doors. And looked once more in her direction.
I guess my movements had caught her attention; she was looking right at me, so on impulse i did a Carol, gesturing to my own head and mouthing, "I like the hat!" And she laughed out loud, saying across the carriage of silent strangers, "Thank you! I like your bike!"
I thanked her in return, the doors opened, and i wheeled my way out of the train.
We'll probably never run into each other again and i have no way of knowing if she recognized the reference or not, but for a few seconds amidst the anonymity of city life there was a spark of human connection. And here i am in the evening, glad for the little richness it's brought into my day.

It’s officially my 4th year in Sydney. And the sights below hold true on every single commute:
1. We treasure our personal distance, creating them without even having to think about it.
2. When we can’t achieve that physical distancing, we turn to our devices, for good or bad, you decide.
3. We stick to what we know, and we feel safe in a group (even encourages us to carve out that private space in public).
People watching is always fun, especially when you see patterns emerge.
What else have you observed? I’d love to hear about them.

Everyday on my train ride home I see all types of crazy things and occasionally I write them down or I text someone just so that I can document them somehow. Here is a collection of some of the wrost\best that I have seen these past couple of weeks. Enjoy! *One: Fashionable Hobos! This week alone I have seen more designer brands on hobos on the train than I have at my job. This horribly drunk hobo in front of me was wearing Burberry and Prada like it was the most natural thing. This other lady yesterday was wearing an Hermes scarf and a Chanel jacket! It comes to show that rich people in LA are all crazy and throw away good shit! *Two: There is nowhere to hide in train! It's a commuter train not an actual train! The only way to run is to actually get it to stop and to get the doors to open, good luck by the way! With this knowledge then why do dumb people think they can get away from the police! Seriously, if I have to see another dumb guy try to run I might just have to tackle him to the ground!
