That night in Kingston. #gordisgreat #courageforgord #tragicallyhip #tragicallyhip2016 #tragicallyhipconcert #lasttour #musictoliveto
Don't you want to see how it ends?*
āWhen the color of the night And all the smoke for one life Gives way to shaky movements Improvisational skills*
Would I have stayed? It was pouring rain when I last saw the Hip at Bluefest. Iād gone to see Dropkick Murphys on another stage, the rain came and it didnāt stop. Rain had leaked into my poncho. I was cold. I was uncomfortable. I had water pooled in my bra. The Tragically Hip would be back soon. They are here a lot. Next time⦠so I left. If Iād known then what I know nowā¦
Itās not that I havenāt seen the Hip before, Iāve seen them four or five times. There was a concert in the CTC, my boss gave me lovely floor seats. A much younger man asked me to dance to Ahead by a Century. He tried to get to get friendly. Flattered, I put a stop to it. Really, mom and wife first and foremost. Not going to lie, my ego loved it.
āNo dress rehearsal, this is our lifeā
Fast-forward to 2011, Bluesfest, The Man turns to me points to The Boy. āWhy does he know all the words?ā Because I listen to the Hip in the car. A lot.
āPut ten bucks in just to get the tank topped up.ā
Weāve drove to the 100th Meridian in Manitoba. It is ājust a line of longitudeā. It wasnāt the whole reason for the trip, but it was one of them. And you all know what was blaring as we pulled into the French Quarter.
We love music. We love songs. Many of them have stories. With an ever expanding collections of vinyl. Lots of songs have stories. Personal stories⦠Things that have exactly nothing to do with the people who wrote them.
So why is this, so damned hard?!
Certainly knowing this may be the end is not helping. I think weāve all watched House and scoffed at a miracle cure. Stage 4 cancer isnāt always an immediate death sentence. Hope. But this is likely the end.
I love words. I love poets and people who bring words together in an interesting way. Who play. Who leave you pondering meanings and double entendre. Words ripe with meaning. Gord is first and foremost a poet.
Delicious turns of phrases⦠(āThey mostly came from towns with long French namesā¦ā ) so much to untangle there. And places and people we knew. (āShe said āI donāt give a fuck about hockey.ā ā)
āāNo tears,ā you said. Understood, understood, I said alright.ā But really there may be tears, there will be singing and there will celebrating all that these five guys from Kingston meant to the country. To Gord, your words have inspired. Your music led to some amazing stories. They helped me understand myself, my country and the world. Thank you. Godspeed. To the band, I hope we near new and interesting things from you. Not easy to stand in that shadow. This canāt be easy for you. Thank you. To the fans, let us grieve the end of an era but know that these words and these song will never be silent. Play it loud!! Rock on.
