To me, the mark of a good strong tune is how many variations it can be put through, how many different interpretations, and still be recognisable as itself.
In that respect Doctor Who’s theme, composed by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire in 1963 must be one of the most incredible tunes ever written as it’s survived every variation thrown at it.
This sort-of Pink Floyd one is by Traffic Experiment and is excellent!

I (Stuart) was sorting through some of our audio project folders yesterday and found George(Shilling)'s separated mix stems from the 2014 Space Oddity sessions. I was listening back to them in isolation, particularly Harri and Penny's layered vocals. With the TE recordings we tend to aim for the big, densely arranged productions, with lots of instrumentation and extended passages (as we did with this originally), but it struck me how good it sounded even with the bare minimum of parts - which is, of course, a testament to the original song and songwriter.
So I took the stems and stripped the mix down to the real basics of the song, taking out the extended instrumental passages and leaving just the keys and the vocals (and a few fx).
Anyway, as our small tribute to the late, great man and his fabulous songs here's a different take (for us) on Space Oddity.
