It has been an awhile since I shared a townplan, and the 1872 plan of Dunedin is one of my favourites. Drawn by F.W.Flanagan, the plan contains a octagon at the centre with radiating geometric rectangles placed in jagged triangles to the south and west, hemming the perfectly spaced rectangles to the North. Besides, the stunning marginalia the plan carefully allocates space. Areas to be reclaimed are already overlaid with city blocks, the rough outline of the old water mark is noted, important government buildings are near or within the octagon, and the periphery to the south is where cemetery plots and a cattle market are placed. The 1965 aerial photograph taken nearly a century later, illustrates how this plan for Dunedin slotted neatly into place with a few omissions closer to the south. It is quite intriguing to think that this 146-year-old plan still impacts how people navigate, commute, and travel in modern day Dunedin.
