Interesting Imagery
The story of Jesus' crucifixion is dripping with allusions to Psalm 22--even a couple direct quotations.Β
But in reading Psalm 22, I came across something interesting: Β in verse 6, it says "But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, despised by the people. All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 'He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!'"
Now, what is interesting is that the word "worm" in the Hebrew is not describing an ordinary worm. It is the derivative of the "towla", or scarlet worm--a worm distinct to Palestine. This worm is known for climbing trees, attaching itself willingly, so that it can lay its eggs, and then it dies on that tree, leaving behind a scarlet remnant (thus its name "scarlet worm").Β
And so, in this passage, we see the beautiful provision of God in allowing David 1000 years before the birth of Christ, to provide such striking imagery!
Though the people mocked Him, and said "You helped so many, and yet you cannot help yourself--come down off the cross".... but Jesus instead is like the towla.Β
He willingly climbed the tree, attaching Himself to it. He went up willingly, and stayed on willingly. There, He sacrificed His life , so that we can be born: He died to give birth to us... and our testimony is the blood of Christ, the scarlet remnant written on our hearts... the remnant of His sacrifice--that we can have life, because He died.Β
He is not only our sacrificial lamb--He is also the despised worm, who we know as our beloved worm.Β
Peace and love, friends.Β
