Meth/Heroin Addiction Awareness
by Michelle Garcia
This is my son. He just turned 20. He is addicted to meth and heroin and lives on the streets of the Tower District. Im not posting these to glorify or exploit him in anyways. He's fully aware I have taken pictures of him and is ok with me posting to bring out awareness of what the streets and addiction REALLY look like. This is also to bring awareness to the opiate epidemic that is very real and very strong in our city in our children's lives and families lives. It is actually becoming worse every 6 months or so and the outcome is scary. Now addicts are faced with tainted drugs that are laced with fentanyl and that is killing people at a rapid rate. Michael suffers from what is called a dual diagnosis. Meaning he has schizophrenia and drug addiction both of which he is scared to battle. Keep your eyes and ears open to communication with your children and the ones you love. I would never want any other parent to watch their child the way that I've had to watch Michael go through this disease.
This has been a huge part of my life for some time now and felt I needed to share. I just saw him this morning. He was waiting for me outside a coffee shop. I cried as he layed there, he must of spent the night, and felt so overwhelmed with life at that moment. My heart is broken in so many ways with all of life's events recently. Also I have made this public so it can be shared to spread the awareness.
* this breaks my heart. I lived in Fresno's Tower District (which is Fresno's LGBT neighborhood as well as the location of the college I studied at) for more than twenty-years. I know the pain of having a family member enslaved to drug addiction and living on the streets in the Tower. My brother was addicted to crack cocaine and he regularly burglarized my apartment, stole from our sister, our mother... anyone he could think of. I saw drug dealers press guns to his head over unpaid debts and I even had to physically assault another drug addict who attacked my brother with a length of pipe because my brother had not shared a crack rock that they'd both paid for. My brother was constantly in and out of prison. Not taking care of his family. His entire focus was the next crack rock. The next high. Its a helpless feeling. But we aren't helpless. We have a Father in heaven who hears our prayers. Unfortunately, at the time I was mired deep in sin myself and not praying or reading my Bible. I reacted to my brother's addiction with rage, often shoving him around and insulting him (proof that my brother loved me, he could have beaten the snot out of me anytime he felt like it but he never did). I so wish I'd been the man I am today back then. A praying man. Please remember all the mothers like Michelle Garcia and all the family members of addicted loved ones and remember those in bondage to drugs and alcohol in your prayers. - Fred (YDI)
