The apartment has been filled with uncomfortable silences for weeks. Even more uncomfortable than her and Cody just not knowing what to say to each other. More uncomfortable than she knows how to deal with. And maybe it made Ainsley want to run. Made her want to get out of there. But she was too stubborn for that. Too stubborn to walk away from her son again. Because she wanted to be his mom. Wanted to be a good mom and be there for the baby. Wanted to get to watch him grow up in to an amazing human. 

She and Zach were lying on the floor laughing - well she’s laughing and he’s doing something that might be a smile - when she heard the door open. Part of her wanted to freeze, scoop the baby up and tuck him away. But she stayed there on the floor with their son. “Hey,” she said, looking up at Cody. 

“You should step up if that’s what you think you need to do. There’s nothing wrong with that. But. Do you have a plan?” Mason wanted to help this kid, but he wasn’t sure how much he could help him if he wasn’t sure he could if he didn’t have a plan.

Zachary was...he was amazing. He was the most perfect baby. And the time that she had spent miserable because he was late had been worth it. Or at least that’s what it had seemed like. And maybe it was true. Maybe the wait was worth it.  

But the more time she spent with him, the more sure she was that she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t be his mom. She had no idea what she was doing. And she’d only promised she would try. And she had tried. For about a week, she’d been trying to be his mom. But she was failing. She wasn’t doing a good jo. She couldn’t do it. 

Leaving Zachary with Cody, she told the man she was going to the store, fearing that he knew she was lying the entire time. With shaking hands, she sat in her car and sent a text to say goodbye. That had been three days ago. 

Three days since she’d seen her son. Held the tiny precious baby. And not seeing him, abandoning him while hiding in her brother’s guest room, had felt more wrong than being his mom felt. But she couldn’t go back. How could she go back? 

She wanted to call Cody. Now that it had been days, she regretted her choice, but she couldn’t seem to convince herself to pick up her phone. Anymore than she could convince herself to drive across town to his apartment. 

"It's nice here," Lesly spoke softly upon approaching the bench that overlooked the lights that would start lighting up the sky come dusk. The area was secluded; the only signs of a way out here was a bike path that looped around full trees. More trees covered the cliff, making an archway over the bench. However secluded and private the area felt, the park entrance was not very far from here. Lesly sat down on the wood and leaned back, straightening her legs out to stretch them. She had to say that she was a bit surprised he would pick this place, of all places.
