Caring is at the heart of the NHS, it’s why I’m a nurse, yet caring is the one thing this government seems incapable of doing. It’s frankly insulting for the government to call us ‘healthcare heroes’ during the pandemic and yet point-blank refuse to improve our pay. It’s frankly insulting that this government can allocate money to things that really don’t matter and then when it comes to funding the NHS suddenly there’s nothing left. This government talks about minimum service levels during strikes but they refuse to talk about fixing the broken system that’s the reason why we’re striking in the first place. They cynically wring their hands about the possibility of patient deaths occurring when we strike to avoid taking responsibility for the very real and totally avoidable deaths that occur due to staff shortages every single day when we’re not on strike. I didn’t want to strike; even with how difficult nursing is at the moment I would rather have been on the ward than on the picket line. But the lack of respect this government has shown towards the nursing profession and indeed the entire NHS made it imperative that I did strike.
