Finally, a cartoonist! Jackie Ormes made waves when black cartoonists were rare and female black cartoonists were unheard of. Ormes found a creative outlet in writing and drawing from an early age and contributed caricatures to her high school yearbook. Early in her career she worked as a journalist for the Pittsburgh Courier. While there, Jackie Ormes created Torchy Brown, a Mississippi-born woman’s adventures at The Cotton Club. Her next strip, Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger, had a precocious little sister/racy big sister premise. The strip was popular enough that Patty-Jo dolls were briefly in production.
