Homes & Hearths
Not all houses are homes. Not all homes are in houses.
Not all fires are hearths, but every hearth has (the active and used capacity to house) a fire in our paradigm.
Home is somewhere consistent, safe, and comfortable. It is a place you desire to be and return to. It doesn't have to be a house - it could be a classroom, under a specific tree, anywhere that fits.
Hearths are a long-term or permanent space used repeatedly to house a fire - such as a wood stove, a fireplace, or a fire pit - which is used to warm people and/or cook food. They do not have to be within a structure or shelter, but they themselves must provide shelter - this is why they must serve one or both listed functions.
We do believe that the strongest of either is when the hearth is within or at a home, as the combined weight maximizes their potency and usefulness. Both have strong metaphysical uses and capacities, being anchors of safety and all. It's a very useful thing when planning wards, manipulating the narrative of your life, and even in "mundane" self-care. Protect your home and hearth, let in those you wish to share that safety with and trust, and both will do you well.
Growing up into a family practice, both magical and religious, means it's hard to tell what's originated from what. Do we treat thresholds how we do because of the diaspora heathenry, the family craft, or specifically our mother's beliefs? Did previous generations make bonfires and sing songs and chant also? We genuinely will never know because everyone we'd ask is dead. Our mother's mother was a Protestant convert and hid the family's history from our mother and her sisters; our mother only learned of the truth through her grandparents. Our mother's father is a warlock but not religious, and he taught our mother very little. It makes it difficult to enter online spaces, whether for "secular" craft or for heathenry, because there was never a divide between magic and religion for us and we don't know where to place that line. We don't really want to place that line in our life, either. Our work cannot be understood in cleanly portioned servings; we cannot separate the celebration of the equinox and the start of planting season from the strengthening of the wards. We mark down when the first flowers bloom, the leaves sprout, the cranes and then the barn swallows return, the first day ozone is smelled. Our permaculture, restorative farming, craft, and all religious work - heathenry and other - are irreversibly interconnected.
It's beautiful.
It's lonely.
This is ultimately a bit of a hot topic, so we'll preface this with a few disclaimers to (hopefully) cut down on the number of bad faith whataboutists that'll crop up in response. Many believing the same thing about something lends power to that faith, each path is one's own, we are not the pope, and we are fallible beings. The only thing we may hold firm authority upon is worship of our patrons.
With that out of the way, let's talk about correspondences and associations. If you scroll most of the witchy tags, you'll run into one of these posts: they list correspondence, usually of plants, with no source or reasoning provided. The details of what means what often shifts blog to blog, unsourced post to unsourced post. As people who like to know why, this is a never-ending source of personal frustration. We often research and spend time working with the plant personally, eventually developing agreements with them on what works best between us; this often doesn't line up with what we see online. It feels like there's one big game of telephone being played with what plants, crystals, and even colors mean in the craft where each person riffs off the last without visible questioning.
We're tired of that. We're really tired of that. We want to see more thoughtful approaches to this line of work. We want to see things that can be conversations worth having! A big part of why we shifted our time on tumblr away from witchblr the first time was because of how it seemed like the main tags were full of superficial content of pretty but often only loosely related pictures. There's nothing wrong with posting things that haven't been worked on over multiple sittings or with sharing photography, but we're in the spellwork tag to look at posts about spells. Maybe we'd have a better experience on a forum site; we don't know. But we do know that in each portion of our craft that we've entered the socmed spaces for, we feel alone in our thoughts, work, and interests. We posted about "astralcord" recently, and while "witchcord" was less bigoted it seemed the same otherwise: clique-ridden and moody with little to offer. A while ago, someone commented in a discord server that it seems like once someone's really doing work in their path they vanish from the online spaces, and we're watching it happen with ourselves.
