Top 30 Movies of 2018 #13 - Mortal Engines I started making this list before I got to see this movie and from the reviews I saw, I was expecting this movie to be near the bottom. Not so. This movie is amazing. They totally showed me something I have never seen before. Battle Cities on tracks. The action and story flow well. One of the complaints from reviews was that the movie spends more time setting up sequels than telling the story. That could not be farther from the truth. I haven't read the books or anything and at the end of the movie I have no idea where the story goes from here. They really seemed to wrap everything up. The movie did nearly no business in the packed holiday season, so unless the movie does so well on Netflix that they decide to bankroll future films, there's little chance of a sequel. I understand that actors generally want to show their faces in movies as much as possible, but I kinda wish the Hester Shaw character kept the scarf on for most of the movie. There is a scene that is very reminiscent of the trench runs on various Death Stars and the opening battle of the Last Jedi. And you can match characters to most of the main cast of New Hope. Top 30 Movies of 2018 #15 - Rampage I played Rampage when I was very short, probably at a Chuck E Cheese when my head was just exploding with pizza and video games and singing robot animals. It was awesome. You are a giant monster causing destruction. Since then Rampage has been much more disappointing. Difficult 8-bit games designed to run you out of quarters as fast as they can don't translate well to other environments. Playing home versions weren't as fun. There's a boardgame that is more about physicality instead of strategy. The original game had no story so my hopes weren't high for this movie. But the movie works. Dwayne Johnson brought it. I was happy to see Malin Akerman (who was so much fun in the Trophy Wife sitcom) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I liked the characterization of the ape. And the giant monsters cause massive destruction. Top 30 Movies of 2018 #21 - To All The Boys I've Loved Before In the 70's and 80's there were a lot of commercials on TV for music collections. So I heard Willie Nelson sing the title of the song countless times w/o hearing more of To All The Girls I've Loved Before. This was a fun movie. Netflix already green lit a sequel. I'm not sure I have more to say on the subject. Top 30 Movies of 2018 - #29 The Nutcracker And The Four Realms This is easily my favorite version of The Nutcracker by far. But like Pope Francis being the best Pope ever, the bar was set really low. I have never enjoyed The Nutcracker. As a ballet it's boring. No dialogue. Just dancing. Cartoons and specials have only ever been slightly better. This is like the 2010 Alice In Wonderland, A Wrinkle In Time and Mirror Mask, only not as good. Young girl/woman goes to a fantasy world and learns things and eventually fixes things. The original director was Lasse Hallstrom who does low budget boring stuff like Gilbert Grape and Cider House. He failed and was replaced by Joe Johnston (Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Jumanji, Rocketeer, Jurassic Park 3, Captain America 1, Wolfman 2010) Solid director, but he makes good movies, not favorite movies. Kira Knightly dumps so very much exposition early on. And the movie misses the heart. Father/daughter dance is a gross concept. There's a bit of learning conformity. Morgan Freeman is under utilized. Richard E Grant (Hudson Hawk) is in the movie, and I found that out from seeing his name in IMDB, not from watching the movie. First director on Star Trek Beyond failed making the movie too expensive to earn money. No Star Trek 4 (Kelvin). First director here failed and Disney cut bait on promotion. Fantastic Four director failed killing FF2 and Boba Fett. Bryan Singer went on a bender instead of directing and failed into Red Sonja. That's a shit ton of white dudes failing.
