Mabel didnât know what happened after they tessered away. Maybe they talked for a bit in their room, maybe they hugged, or maybe they simply collapsed into bed, absolutely exhausted. Thatâs all Mabel remembered - sleeping.
Sleeping, with the fang clutched close to her side. She dreamt of odd things that night, of angry whispers in the dark, of coils tightening and tightening and choking her, of death, of death⌠and she awoke, groaning, to the sound of her alarm.
Everything hurt, and she really meant everything. It was an effort to roll over and hit snooze, but to sink back into her bed, to close her eyes once againâŚ
âMabel?â
âMph, DipperâŚâ She waved at him. âNooâŚâ
âMabel, sweetie? Itâs time to get up.â
Sweetie. That wasnât Dipper.
âYouâve got to get ready for school.â Her mother gently brushed the hair out of her eyes. âYour fatherâs making breakfast downstairs - if you get ready fast, you can still have a bit before the bus comes!â
Mabel made a face, and then heaved herself up. She realised she still had something in her hands - the fang. Quickly she stashed it under the covers, and got to her feet.
âDoesnât that sound, uh, nice?â There was something in Annaâs smile. âYou look tired, sweetie. Did you stay out late last night?â
Mabel rubbed her eyes. âNo,â she lied, and could almost feel her motherâs smile stretch.
âWell, we didnât see you come home last night. And, heh, we were waiting until way past your curfew!â She gave a wooden laugh. âSo thatâs⌠you know, I wanted to-â
âFine. We went to a party or whatever. Weâre back now, arenât we⌠Whereâs Dipper?â She looked around, and spotted him in the corner. âOh, there you are! Morning.â
He gave an awkward wave, and Mabel turned back to her.
âSee Mom? Weâre both fine, so itâs none of your business.â
âI-â
âIâm gonna get changed now! You know, âcause I canât wait to have breakfast with you two and all. So bye.â
Her mother lingered there for a second, mouth open like she wanted to protest⌠but after a moment, she sighed and made for the door. Mabel closed the door hard behind her, then grimaced and touched her shoulder.
âOw. Iâm sore in places I didnât even know I could be.â She chuckled at Dipper. âSome night last night, huh?â
He blinked at her. âYeah⌠some night. Are you okay?â
âIâll be okay, donât worry about me.â
âMabelâŚâ
âIâll be fine.â She sank back into the covers, yawning. âJusâ tired, I⌠ow.â
âYou okay?â
âThereâs something in my bed-â She felt the fang, and immediately snorted. âWelp, I nearly stabbed myself just now.â
âWhat?â
She drew it out, and watched a strange expression flicker across her brotherâs face. He looked sort of tense, sort of angry, and she had to call his name before heâd reply.
âDipper. Dipper. Bro.â She chuckled when he blinked and looked over at her. âWhat, you donât like it?â
âDonât like it?â Dipper curled his lip. âMabel, itâs a demon.â
âOhhh nooo, how terrible.â
âThatâs- you know what I mean. Itâs not like me. Itâs dangerous, and weâre gonna get rid of it.â His eyes met hers, and frowned. âMabel, weâre gonna get rid of it, arenât we?â
Mabel clutched the fang a little closer to her chest. She opened her mouth, but there was a knock on their bedroom.
âSweetie?â Annaâs voice again. âBreakfast is-â
âI know! I said weâre getting changed, mom!â
âOkay, I trust you. Just donât take too long, we-â
âYeah, yeah, weâre coming!â Mabel snapped. She glanced back at Dipper, and rolled her eyes. âI guess we gotta talk about this later,â she said, and stuffed the fang into her backpack. âOkay, weâre coming down in a second! Let me find a sweaterâŚâ
She walked past Dipper to her drawers, and felt his eyes on her as she picked something out. They didnât talk again; a coming argument hung over them like a storm cloud, waiting to break.
Once Mabel got changed, she hefted her bag and sped down the stairs to the kitchen. The smell of bacon made her stomach rumble; the news channel her parents were scrambling to turn off made it twist.
â-details are constantly emerging of the demonic massacre in Piedmont last night. Strangely, the first 911 calls only reported the incident as a shootout, but the terrible truth emerged when-â
âMabel!â Mark stabbed the remote and shot up with a wide smile. âYou ready for breakfast?â
âNot hungry.â
âWh- Mabel!â Anna watched her walk past them to the door. âCome back! Can we ask-â
âSorry, gotta catch the bus! School is important or whatever, you know how it is.â
âMabel-â
Mabel slammed the front door behind her, and rolled her eyes at Dipper. He made a face.
âYou saw the-â
âThe TV, yeah.â She took a left - not the way to the bus stop. âWhatever, itâs not like theyâre not gonna do anything about it. They donât even have the guts to ask us about it.â
âYeahâŚâ
âDonât worry about it, bro.â Mabel gave a smile. âWe got the whole day to ourselves. Wanna go to the park? I think weâve earned a park day.â
