“ why didn’t you wait for me? ”
“Why didn’t you wait for me?”
Harvey heard the words echo through his mind, almost as though Tommy himself had actually said them. If he’d just waited behind like he was supposed to instead of going ahead of Tommy to prove a point to their Dad, Tommy wouldn’t have had to come after him to yank him out. It would be Tommy here now, instead of Harvey. He’d still be alive.
“I’m sorry, Tommy.” The words were muttered under his breath, cracked with unshed tears as his thumb traced the engraved name. His knees pressed against the soil as he kneeled over where his brother lay, muddying his jeans, but he didn’t care. His palm pressed flat against the stone. The sob finally broke from his lips, echoing throughout the empty graveyard.
“I’m so sorry. It should have been me.”
