Its a shitty recording, without even the balm of music to help (I had it playing on another line while I “sang” to keep the pacing right). The chorus breaks down somewhat, but I tried.

This is a Marimo Cat. Marimo cats are a curious species, and have a symbiotic relationship with the algae that fills their fur. Similar to marimo balls, the Marimo Cat spends the beginning of it’s life cycle in lakes with gentle current. The algae in their fur photosynthesizes all the energy they need to grow at a whopping 5 cm a year. During that time, they never uncurl and never open their eyes.

Once they attain 20-30 cm in diameter (the maximum size that the algae can support alone), the marimo cat will uncurl and begin to hunt fish, snails, waterbirds, and whatever else it can in its birth lake during times of summer plenty. With time and practice it will learn to go overland for longer and longer distances, up to a mile. Once cold weather sets in, the marimo will head towards the sea.

In the sea, marimo cats can attain enormous size with supplemental feeding combined with the photosynthesis provided from their fur. Legends of mossy islands that purr have yet to be substantiated, but the largest recorded specimen measured 12 meters in diameter. Legends of intelligence growing with size have been substantiated, however, so larger specimens may occur.

Another legend popular even today is the story that terrestrial cats are marimos that dried out and lost their algae. This is story, while romantic, is false- a marimo that dries out completely falls into a coma. If water is not applied soon, then bodily systems will shut down, resulting in death. While the marimo cat has a primitive set of lungs, most of it’s breathing is via oxygen produced by photosynthesis. It is unclear how large marimo can sustain oxygen at such incredible depths as they have been reported to be seen (the deepest being seen at 1179 m below sea level).
