Les MisƩrables (2012) and Cats (2019) suffer from the same issue just different versions of that issue, that issue being that they're unlistenable.
Les MisƩrables (2012) is unlistenable because some of the important, main characters (Valjean and Javert, they're my main issue) just sound terrible. Not being able to hit or a hold a note, or sounding a bit raspy. Now this is because of a myriad of issues from behind the scenes, Hugh Jackman dehydrating himself, Russel Crowe having 4 different vocal teachers meaning he started over again every time he got a new one , Anne Hatheway losing an unhealthy amount of weight in a short amount of time, which had a toll on her health and some other stuff.
Cats (2019) on the other hand, is unlistenable because you can't keep a beat while listening to the songs. The only song you can keep a beat to is Skimbleshanks: the railway cat, but that song was performed by a dancer, so it's no real miracle that that song turned out well. And the reason this is a problem is not only because it worsens the quality of the songs, this is a mainly a problem because if you can't keep a beat, you can't dance to a song. Which is a problem for Cats because Cats is a musical known for it's dancing. Does anyone else see the problem here?
And I think the cause of this problem is Tom Hooper, he's a director who know nothing about musical theatre or music in general. So I hope that both these musicals in 5-10 years time get another movie adaption that does them justice.
(I really recommend Sideways' videos on both these movies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3aK-EK5V2k&t=648s (his video on Cats) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ikqU6G6Xgs (his video on Les MisƩrables)
