That quintessential New York summer activity: opening a fire hydrant to cool off. This one was on 45th Street and 10th Avenue in 1959.

A lethal bomb, in a basket, is gingerly transported into a special van outside Bryant Park, December 24, 1956. The apparent work of George Metesky, the “Mad Bomber” who terrorized New Yorkers for 16 years, the five-inch pipeful of gunpowder was found in a phone booth of the Public Library, 42d St. and Fifth Ave.
