For centuries, the Matheson-Monroe estate had been peaceful. Monroe’s Sire had ensured that they would never be separated even by death, allowing him to feed on his servants. Monroe clung to the other man even after he’d adjusted to being a vampire, trusting him completely, loving him with everything in him.
Then one night, he’d woken to find their bed (coffins were just tasteless, really) empty. Miles had fled, without a trace. In despair, Monroe had refused to eat until the hunger grew too much. The first victims of the ensuing rampage were the guards who wouldn’t tell him where the other man was. Then he went after the villagers. There were no survivors.
Even now, decades later, Monroe had a reputation for instability and violence. He could hold it back to some extent, putting on a facade of charm and calmness, but it took very little for him to be provoked to the point of ripping out a throat with his teeth and gorging himself on the blood that poured out.
He growled when footsteps sounded in the cellar, but it was only Jeremy, the last servant who had known Monroe when he was the stupid, foolish human Bass, who had fallen in love with a traitorous vampire who had only been luring him in for... what? Why would he turn him if he was only going to leave? “What is it?” Monroe demanded.
Jeremy held his hands up, palms facing Bass. “There’s a lady upstairs to see you, sir,” he said. “She calls herself Mia.”
“Is it nightfall?”
“It will be shortly.”
“Good. I’ll be up... shortly.”
