Man, that's brutal. I think the worst I had was total deafness for a few days. I had an ear infection that spread through a perforation in the ear drum, that went to my skull. Had to get some of my skull shaved off and replaced w/ artificial bone.

Fortunately I haven't had to lose part of my skull. But it's gotten to the point that each time we need a surgery they look up above my ear and go "yes there is some non-scarred tissue we can still use". There was also one time (one of my first surgeries) where my ear-drum was completely eaten out by an ear infection - enough it imploded and leaked out of my ear in a sludge. Had to get a completely new ear-drum.

Mastoiditis? That's what I had. Two operations on my left ear, thanks to various infections leading to mastoiditis.

Actually, the ear surgery I had was because a bruise formed on my ear drum. While on my chair at home I dropped my mouse, so I bent down to pick it up and on my way up I felt pain and blood pour out of my ear. Turns out that bruise had burst. Then while the doctor was looking in my ear he discovered why it had formed: Cholesteatoma.
