Console Fighting Games of 1996 - Tobal No 1
Tobal No 1 is a sci-fi 3D fighting game developed by Dream Factory and released in Japan and the US in 1996, characters for the Tobal series which spanned 2 game were designed by Akira Toriyama.
Tobal No 1 is set abord an Earth star ship that discovers a very rare and valuable power source on the planet Tobal, with a fighting tournament set up to decided who gets the right to mine this power source.
Tobal No 1 features a grappling system which opens up new moves for each fighter, grapples can also be escaped and reversed as well as a combo system.
Tobal No 1 and its sequel Tobal 2 were both critically well received with the first game also a commercial success with sales just under the 1m mark, a major plummet in sales for the sequel however saw the end of the series with competition from Tekken and Mortal Kombat likely the cause for the falling sales figures.
