Hello, everyone! Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Since it’s been on my mind, I wanted to ask for advice. How would you write Thanksgiving Town? As an American, I’m sure most of you are familiar with the white colonizer narrative of Thanksgiving. In my fanfics and rewrites, I want to explore all the holidays but Thanksgiving is the hardest holiday realm to write about. If I wanted to highlight celebration strictly of Native American culture, I’d of course, do my research but it’s the fantasy elements I struggle incorporating with. If I decide to focus solely on the idea that it’s about being thankful and the turkey, the fantasy elements work better but then the world building struggles. If I stick with native culture, how would I address the heavy themes about colonization? I don’t mind addressing it but it feels a little odd to put such a heavy theme when the focus is on fantasy, like it seems potentially insensitive. What are your thoughts? I’ve read about Thanksgiving Town in the Hour of the Pumpkin Queen book but I prefer coming up with my own versions of the holidays.
