Can we just talk about how weird the 2012 turtle's lair was? Like, they lived in an abandoned subway station that, instead of connecting to the surface like subways are suposed to, connected to a sewer pipe.
A sewer pipe
How does that even happen? How does one just shut down a subway station and then go "you know what's a good idea? Making it so no one can ever use this station again by sealing it over and running a man sized sewer pipe directly in front of the entrance! And just in case anyone still needs to get down there, for whatever reason, we'll install a manhole cover directly into the roof of the station without a ladder or any way to reach it from the floor."
What mental gymnastics, what absolute failing of New Yorks city planing team or whoever keeps track of that lead to this travesty?
And the sewr pipe connects to the subway station. That is a full on entrance, from the sewer. Somebody went "should we block this?" and they said "No, let's just fucking leave it there."
The more I think about it the more I think this was designed by someone who has never once seen a subway in their life.
Were my turtles mutated intentionally? Yes!! They definitely were created on purpose! I answered with more detail here.

Whoโs the medic? Mostly Splinter! But also sorta Raph? But they also all have at least basic medical knowledge??? Idk Explained in previous ask.
โ
Alright, whatโs the lair like?
Well, hereโs a really rough sketch. Itโs pretty basic. Essentially, Splinter found an empty open space in an area of sewers thatโs no longer in use.
Over time, he would add to it with old appliances found in the trash/dump/abandoned homes and apartments. His experience as a maintenance worker really came in handy, but he wasnโt as well versed in technology or construction, so it took a lot of trying and failing before the lair actually looked and functioned like a home.
The space was originally all open. Splinter built walls to create separate bedrooms and a functioning kitchen.
The old drainage pool in the corner became a step-down lounge area, where thereโs an old couch and some hand-made bag chairs, as well as a tv and probably some old videogame system too.
Between the lounge area and the kitchen is an open space that the family uses for training, since they donโt have a separate dojo.
The bathroom is just outside of the main lair, at the south entrance/exit (I forgot to sketch it). It has a functioning toilet and an old bathtub, as well as some basic medical supplies.
Thereโs no medbay, as Splinter didnโt raise his sons with the intention of them fighting and potentially getting seriously injured. (He may have to build one on in the future thoughโฆ)
Raphโs bedroom used to be a storage closet that they (mostly Donnie) used to stash anything theyโd find on their outings. But when Raph joined the family (around age 9), they converted it to a bedroom. He has to walk through Donnieโs room to get to his own, but it works.
The lair overall is a mishmash of scavenged parts and old appliances. Itโs not fancy by any means, but it is functional. For the most part.
โ
Ehhh itโs a work in progress. But yeah, this is the basic idea for the lair. Iโll eventually have to do some actual designs, but Iโll worry about that when I get to it.

It's a staple of the ninja turtles mythos. But why would the turtles live under the streets? In this video I explore the practical reasons for that, and the many different versions of the turtle lair.
