gahh I'm not fluent either, just a learner (this is me practicing) I'm mostly wondering about pronouns and stuff. Prepare for a wall of yap
currently Ronin, Leo, Splinter and sometimes Raph use 'watashi' spelt in kanji
Donnie, Mikey and sometimes Raph use 'watashi' spelt in hiragana
Maybe an occasional 'boku' for Raph and Mikey. I know some people in their 20s use it casually sometimes.
Leo uses 'kimi' for p much everyone (except maybe not Splinter). He always spells it in kanji for Ronin and will switch between kanji and hiragana when for his brothers (depending on readability). Currently I'm thinking 'anata' in hiragana for Splinter (if it comes up idk). It's unnatural (kinda on purpose) but I doubt he would refer to Splinter with otousan since he's not technically his dad.
Maybe I'll give Leo an occaisional 'omae' for his brothers
Donnie uses 'kimi' in kanji for Ronin. 'omae' for his brothers and an occaisional 'kimi' in hiragana maybe. 'anata' for Splinter.
The rest I'm thinking are the same? Mostly rn I'm trying to gauge how formal they're being with Ronin. I'm sure on Ronin, Mikey and Splinter not speaking very formally. Donnie and Raph speak casually but respectfully. Not sure about Leo, though.
ik you said you don't know much, but I'll send the first part I translated here if you wanna see it. I probably won't post the final version since I don't wanna go off anon. I'll also put the direct translations and translators notes.
Leo: もう一つのチャネルに内談やってくれてですか 私の家族と君だけで?(Can you please make another channel for a private discussion? For just my family and you?)
Ronin: 必要だ?(Is that necessary?*)
Leo: 必要ないだけど 私たちは内談をほしい (It's not necessary, but we want to have a private discussion.)
Ronin: どうして日本語に?(Why the Japanese?)
Leo: 一方のドナを嫁なら妨げるって ドナは言う (So if another Donnie tries to read through they'll be hindered, Donnie says.)
Leo: 妨げてだけでも JPN-ENG翻訳は最良じゃないよ (Just hindered*, but JPN-ENG translators aren't the best.)
Ronin: ミレニアルズは日本語を話せないんだよ?(The Millennials* don't speak japanese?)
Leo: 文字面に流暢してるはレオさんだけです (The only one fluent in written words is Leo-san.)
Ronin: まぁいい 待っててよ (Ok fine, wait for moment)
*here, Ronin says "Do I have to?" because he's reluctant about the approaching conversation, but I feel like the translation here gives off that he just doesn't want to make the channel
*I want to reword this part, translating from the original english makes it seem a little stiff. Bringing up the fact that they'll be hindered seems redundant and stiff/unnatural for a fluent speaker
*unsure if I wanted them to write millennials in katakana or roman letters
Other notes uhmmmmm Leo uses です and くれて when talking to Ronin directly, I might make him loosen up later. Ronin only uses だ because he's speaking casually as an equal, not because he doesn't like them obvi.
There's some other stuff, I fear. But I'll figure it out probably 👍
I'm honored you choose my silly fic to practice your Japanese on :D Feel free to yap anytime.
and oh i see! Yeah, I can see it. (You can always upload via anon too, since Ao3 allows that! Not saying you HAVE to, but it's an option :) or are u talking abt on tumblr? haha) Leo and Raph uses 'ore' as teenagers (while Mikey and Donnie used 'boku'), according to the dub, but maybe since they're older now they've swapped to 'watashi'? :0 that's a good way to denote aging and maturity! (In my opinion, however, I do not see Raph using boku, especially now, as an adult. Sorry to destroy your vision >~< )
Or maybe they're just using different pronouns for this convo because they're speaking to Ronin? The nuance does not come as easily to me, so I can't speak much for that. Same to the many versions of 'you', so I'll leave those up to you. From what I've picked up though, 'omae' sounds perfect for Leo to use towards his brothers, though. Maybe especially when he's exasperated haha
Would 'anata' be appropriate for rise!Splinter? I feel like that's a bit too cold? Maybe. You're right in how they would not use 'otou-san'.
and my god i didn't think about it while i was writing the actual passages what they would call him. maybe splinter-san or yoshi-san or maybe no -san at all? mikey calls murakami, murakami-san so maybe he defaults to address older men w/ -san? (that's the vibe i get, and that's the rule i set out, with how they all call ronin, ronin-san and the 03 turtles by -san as well, to differentiate yes but also to respect age status (which i know they dont do that much in canon but bleh i choose to make them do that so :P))
And that's pretty much all I can comment on. I will just have to trust you in the other parts! Good luck!
If I told you I was translating the part where the copes and ronin speak to eachother in japanese into japanese how would you feel
and also would you maybe have any relevant notes about the scene mayhaps 👉👈
i say go for it!!! i dont have any notes, but it's been a while so i might not remember them even if i did have them. what kind of notes are u looking for? im not even REMOTELY close to being like even proficient at japanese tho...
