To see, or not to see? [Ch. 1]

A vivid imagination.
Thats what doctors said you had, every time you visited. It was always said with a gentle smile and with an assuring voice.
"No, ma'am, your child isn't schizophrenic. They're just young and has a vivid imagination, this happens often with children their age!"
Your first memory of the doctor saying this to your father was when you were six, him parroting the words your father had heard since this little problem came up.
There were always such big words thrown around by doctors. "Maladaptive daydreaming, schizophrenia, hallucinations".
Well. You couldn't understand them back then, and you certainly didn't understand why you had to make these visits so often!
You did see them, after all! You saw the things your grandfather talked about whenever he told stories of his job; like griffins, little ghost looking guys who walked on two legs with layers shooting out of his eyes, animals that couldn't really be described. (you tried once, the best you could formulate it was a mix between an armadillo and a rabid dog)
It astounded you when other kids or adults couldn't see them, they were right in front of you!!
But, as time passed, you learnt to hide those thoughts, you learnt not to voice your concerns when you saw these creatures, you chose not to think about them. After all, they were just products of an over creative mind, weren't they?
You snapped out of your thoughts when your father turned the TV up louder.
"-This evening a mysterious explosion occurred at the British museum, almost destroying important artefacts, one of witch being the Rosetta Stone. Local authorities are blaming a faulty gas pipe, and are undergoing thorough investigations-"
Your father let out a whistle, leaning back in his seat as he sipped at his wine, the glass twinkling under the festive lights of your Christmas tree.
" _______, if the Rossetta Stone had been destroyed, your grandfather would have had a heartattack right then and there! In fact, I think he's rolling in his grave!"
You looked at him. Like, really looked. He was trying to lighten the mood, he knew you were saddened by the sudden death of your grandpa just two weeks ago so reminding you of him, of his nature was initially a good idea. The thought of him still hurt though.
Your father must've noticed your faraway, saddened look and made his way over to you.
He patted your back, kissing your temple as Jet, (short for wadjet, of course) your funky borzoi of joy came bounding over
"Its alright dear, just take him on a walk around town and when you're back we can watch stupid movies, alright? We dont have to talk about him."
You nodded mutely, fastening jets leash on as you began to walk.
Ever since your grandfathers death your imagination has been acting up. You've been seeing more and more supernatural things. Now terms like Maladaptive daydreaming were popping up in even your friend-group.
"Its an obvious trauma response!" Your friend alex said, popping another mint in his mouth as you both sat on the steps of the abandoned warehouse not to far from where you both lived.
"Your grandpa just died, and he was an important figure in your life! Of course you'd develop Maladaptive daydreaming, or at least worsen it!"
Jet, as if sensing your thoughts, nudged your shoulder. Absent-mindedly having walked to the warehouse. You petted his fur, feeding him a small treat as a thanks.
Then he looked up, barking excitedly, and when you saw what he was looking at, you almost passed out.
"Ohhhh i need to sleep, what in the world?Oh nononono.... Wait, Is that my jazz teacher?!-"
There was. A giant mansion ontop of the warehouse. A mansion, at least four stories high, ontop of your beloved hangout spot.
And not only that, one of your favourite mentors figures in your life, the man who has taught you jazz and, with the help of your grandpa, got you into mythology and so turned you into a kemetic polytheist was guiding two kids, one of them your age, the other a tad younger, up the stairs of the warehouse mansion.
You had to be hallucinating.
Jet barked excitedly, recognising Amos, the man who always gave him extra pets whenever you brought him along to your lessons. And he looked down. At you both. And his lips (though you had no idea how you could see those details when he was that high up) quirked into a fond smile as he ushered the two in.
You tied Jets leash to a fence, commanding him to "please for the sake of the gods, stay put! Not like last time!" As you pulled out your phone, texting your father that "it might take longer for me to get home, no need to wait up".
You looked up at the mansion, now having at least a bit more confidence that is was truly real. Your eyes darted to a way you could possibly get up. And then you saw the ragged, rusty, broken down escape ladder leaning uo the the "roof" of the warehouse.
"Is risking my life for something that might not even be real worth it?"
Jet barked in protest, but you paid him no mind.
"Alright then, let's do this..."
