Advice for Remy, Day 107. Walking is the best form of exercise - even if you’ve not quite learned how to do it yet. You’re just getting to that stage now where you’re almost ready to walk. You keep pulling yourself up and scooting along things so competently and quickly now, it’s surely only a matter of time before you’re off and away on your own. Your legs, though only very little still, are so strong and solid, and you’re standing unaided now (until you realise you’re doing it, then your legs fold like a broken clothes horse). You’re clearly getting stronger and stronger by the day, so today we thought we’d take you for your first proper walk outside the house. We took your nice tasteful walker across the road and between the fields, and set you free to trundle along like a tiny drunk pensioner. We thought you’d get bored after a while, or drive it into the field. But you soldiered on and on, direct and true, plodding away like a determined little trooper. Your little legs were working away, swinging out and round and inward over and over, propelling you forward like a little wooden wind-up toy. We genuinely couldn’t believe how far you went, and eventually we had to stop you in case you overdid it. I’m hoping that this impetus remains when you get older, and you enjoy going for walks. It’s such a great way to simply and pleasantly get plenty of exercise, and at the moment it’s pretty much all we have available to us. With us living where we do, your childhood will be full of walks in the countryside, and both me and your mum really hope you’re keen on them - to be honest you may well have no choice (I’ve tried resisting your mum taking us on long walks and it never works). So prepare yourself - this longest walk of your life is just the very first step.
