Great beast, o dragon of the roaring tide. Let there be nothing but flame outside. ----- A cave entrance forms out the tectonic fury of the world, a barrier of rock cracks and falls apart against a mountain. Trees were crushed into splinters, greenery turned into sod and mush. Nearly half a day of quakes happened before it passed. shaking the above and below. Something other than the earth stirs at the end, an aftershock taken a different image. Nothing happens for weeks. Life thrown into chaos in the surrounding area. A scarred landscape, broken vistas over a ruptured view. A storm rages, flooding it all. Washing away the remains of countless little creatures. It makes a bird fly high, higher than it normally would. Shelter was abundant, but the cracks let rain pour everywhere. Not enough trees to find that weren’t taken. But the mountain had a cave, one that nothing else went toward. It should have been cold but even just outside it was warm. A pleasant gift, something welcoming as the rain fell away from the gaping maw. Yet it doesn’t fly too far inside, the bird was no fool. Perhaps it should make a nest up here, away from all the devastation and cold. Then, just as the heat began to fade, a wave of warmth rippled out from deep inside the dark cavern. Like it had taken a breath. An aftershock followed the strange hot . A tiny crack opened up close by the bird, revealing an alluring glow coming from within. The avian came forward and looked to see what it was. There rests the dragon. Its wings were the ceiling, fossilised and coated in stalactites. Its legs were pillars that held up the mountain. Its blood was hotter than flame as it flows out from a fallen rock’s scratch. Its scales shimmered obsidian and black diamonds. Its head rested just above, fangs able to tear apart the earth just barely parted open. Surrounding it was a sea of gold, molten by the heat that radiated from the greatest beast. The riches of kingdoms sluggishly crashed against its immense bulk, the harsh radiance outshining the sun. It was a gilded lake. The dragon took another breath, a legion of embers fluttering out like a swarm of fireflies. A rush of warmth reaching throughout the whole cave, the entire mountain. The bird watched the dragon as it slowly stirred in its ancient sleep, shifting with the speed of continents against its molten bed. Each movement shaking the mountain again, until the day it woke up. Eventually, the bird quietly moved back to its resting place.
The door was open.
I wake up in a vast, white void. In this void I dream about the colour blue. Then red. Then black-green.
I wake up in a dream. Layers and layers where I realise ‘this isn’t real, I know that now’ and not get the joke until my home because fractal spirals on the edge of an unreal horizon. Far out, dude.
The colours are lovely. Shadows on a canvas to form a prism silhouette. Curtains of the rainbow against a soft pillow of early-morning sunshine. Ideas woven to make a pleasant dream.
I... I wake-
In a dream there exists a stranger in a silk suit, a brooch in the shape of a tortoise pinned to neck and cuffs. They have a smile that’s like an oak rack of porcelain, passed down to never be used except in times where things feel just a little unreal.
They have a fire poker and they jab at a dead bonfire. It casts the shadow of something far out, heavy and mellow. They mutter about candle wax. Something to do with vinyl polish, scratching out the lines. They notice they are in a dream, but it’s not a dream.
They stand up. They strike down the floor, marble and ceramic tiles layered in honeycomb sequences, then cast their weapon away. It’s dangerous to go alone. They dance to themself, it’s a slow tune without mood lights. Dress shoes tap to the beat. They straighten a tie. They put on a wider smile.
It becomes metal underneath, rust polished out by scrapes and scratches. They are in a cave. Secret facility. A ruined hospital with smashed lobster tanks. It doesn’t matter, here they rein as sovereign to what almost makes sense then goes back to a land of tranquil, sweet nothings.
They kick dust up and it becomes a scene transition. Script check, tap the mic. This will go on the family photo album. There is no cause for alarm. It snaps back, a film reel cut without the effects. In the fever nightmare, there is no boundaries of vision against itself. Music plays and it sounds vaguely like an actual language. Mumbled lyrics where you really, really don’t need to care about the words.
A semblance of meaning and symbolism rushes by, scenes taken straight out of other stuff and half-written drafts suddenly jut in like nails into a new cabinet or painting hook. Stop. Go back. What happened next? It rewinds back, but the scene goes different. Is it better? It happens again, the same characters in mirror motions. Half-memories in real time. The lag is real.
Again. Again. Again. A typewriter key juts into the paper and it acts as a true stamp. Of approval. It feels too real. This isn’t real. It’s just a-
