Chapter three is here!Â
While James recovers at home with family, Elizabeth remembers and comes to a sharp realization.
For all the ladies of the Norribeth discord. This is for you with love and pain. <3
Okay, I'll give you 5 characters from Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Kylo Ren, Mace Windu, and Luke Skywalker!
1. Han Solo. He will always be my #1. He is the reason my mom thought I’d enjoy A New Hope when she showed it to me for the first time. I’d just seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in theaters and LOVED it, so she was like, “Yeah, you’re ready for Star Wars. Here’s some more of that guy who played Indy.” 8-year-old me imprinted on Han like a baby duckling and I’ve loved him best ever since.Â
2. Luke Skywalker. I really do love Luke’s journey from bored farm kid to a Jedi growing into his own power who finds family. I’m not from a farm but from a small enough town I totally get his I NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE whining in the first movie, and on repeated watchings of the new trilogy, I think Luke’s decisions, while frustrating story-wise, are devastatingly sad and very much in character. I am on the lookout for any “Luke on the island angsting about how his hubris has cost him his nephew and his students and OMG LEIA TRUSTED ME” fics that exist. I want to roll around in the tragedy. If you have them... send them to me. *holds out hand like I’m trying to Force-summon something*Â
3. Obi-Wan Kenobi. I love Alec Guinness’ portrayal. He was my introduction to Serious British Actors from a Certain Era. Loved Ewan McGregor’s to bits, too. He’s one of my favorite things about the prequels. Just another very young adult who was too young to be asked to do what he did (train Anakin), DID HIS BEST, and failed spectacularly through circumstances he couldn’t control anyway. He needs a hug. Definitely looking forward to the new series.Â
4. Kylo Ren. He. Is. Fascinating. Like A++ acting, Adam Driver. He is The Worst, but I am also riveted every time he’s on screen when I’m in a more serious mood, and like to laugh at his over-the-topness when I’m not. I still have so many questions, though, like what the Knights of Ren were FOR and why he got to be one. Also, DID YOU KNOW HE WAS ONLY WITH THE FIRST ORDER FOR SIX YEARS BEFORE TFA? I didn’t until I got my dictionary. I want to know more about... how that worked.Â
5. Mace Windu. I know, I know. I’m putting him last when the JERK WHO KILLED HAN is on this list. But look... I love Samuel L. Jackson. I love his purple lightsaber and the cute story about why he had it. But the prequels never really let us get to know Mace either through his relationships or just moments that show us who he is as a person. He’s a neato Jedi on the council, but I struggle to come up with things to say about him. (I know there are probably books??? I haven’t read???) I have lots of feelings and questions about Kylo Ren. I’m just kind of “meh” about Mace Windu.Â
Ok, I certainly shall ask! You're Corri on FF, right? I know it was written a couple years ago, but your Tavington Christmas Carol is one of my favorites to read, with the original take on a classic story. Were there a lot of challenges writing it? Oh, and after Price of a Tear, does Groves ever get to see his mermaid daughter?
Sorry this took so long, @tiny–spock and thanks for this chance to walk down memory lane.Â
Yep, I’m Corri on ff.net, and that is definitely my fic. I was trying to remember when I posted it, (2001!) and I realized there are students in my freshman composition classes who were infants when I wrote it, and that is absolutely WILD. I have been in fandom and writing fic for a LONG TIME.Â
Anyway, you asked about challenges, and I wish I had more precise memories I could share. I remember wanting to make sure that while I was echoing the Dickens story at key moments and following the same structure, I was giving my readers something that they couldn’t have gotten by just reading the original again. I also remember having a lot of fun choosing which characters were going to manifest as which Christmas ghosts. I also remember going back and forth about how much a person like my beloved colonel would change under these circumstances and how he’d show it. He’s awfully grumpy, and I didn’t want to go overboard.Â
Ok, other followers… if you’ve not seen The Patriot, which is the movie this fic is for, Colonel William Tavington is the VERY villainous villain in a not terribly good but VERY PRETTY Revolutionary War era historical drama about why you shouldn’t kill Mel Gibson’s family. (Also the moral of Braveheart). William is played by Jason Isaacs, who is just British and angry and DONE for the whole thing. It’s also got Tom Wilkinson as a more stuffy and rule-following but equally done Cornwallis, and I live for it. I read a whole lot about the Revolutionary War when I started to write fic about the movie, and I discovered all of the ridiculous historical liberties that the creators had taken (same director as Stonewall, I think, so that should tell you something), which is how I told myself it was ok to invest so much time and energy into a character who does the worst thing he does (also early college me LOVED VILLAINS SO MUCH). William is also the reason I ran around the house in fangirl glee when Jason got cast as Lucius Malfoy, and he is one of my earliest examples of minor characters I wasn’t supposed to really like much developing voluminous headcanons. Finally, my obsession with this character probably kickstarted my 18th century British military uniform problem, which would only get worse when Curse of the Black Pearl came out a couple years later.Â
And speaking of PotC and people in those British uniforms… you asked about Groves’ daughter from “Price of a Tear,” and my answer is a resounding YES. I always thought she would go looking for him someday. She’d probably run into Andrew Gillette on her way to finding daddy Groves (Andrew is still on the fence about believing in mermaids even though one of them saved his life once… not his fault he was unconscious the whole time.) And then there would be several chapters of cuteness as Theo and his long lost mermaid daughter figure out how much they have in common despite being strangers. (I want to write this… I am just lazy.)Â
Hope that satisfied your curiosity, and feel free to send me other questions!Â
