Gem jumped, startled by the sudden muffled exclamation. She was currently on the kitchen counter, seeing if there was anything good for her to borrow. She knew that, ever since she revealed herself to Impulse and Skizz, there really was no reason for her or Grian to borrow anymore. But sometimes it was nice to just do what felt familiar.
Gem looked over toward the front door, the source of where the voice had come from. It was clearly Skizzâs voice but it was weird he hadnât come inside yet. The doorknob jiggled, but otherwise remained closed.Â
Her interest piqued, Gem found her way back into the walls and towards the entrance into the outside. They hardly ever used this, since outside was dangerous and not really worth it but it was good to have an outside exit just in case.Â
Gem found herself near the front door on the ground and looked up to see that it was indeed Skizz standing there. He looked frustrated which sent a brief shiver down Gemâs spine. But she ignored it. Skizz was not mad at her and even if he was, he would never hurt her. She had learned this over the past few weeks of knowing both him and Impulse.
âSkizz?â She called out to him. âWhat are you doing?â Skizz jumped and his eyes immediately looked down and widened when he saw Gem.
âGemstone? I could ask you the same thing.â Skizz said with a chuckle, kneeling down so he wasnât so far above her.
âJust thought it was weird you hadnât gone inside yet.â Gem said with a shrug.
âYeah, turns out I forgot my keys this morning. And since Impulse locked the door on his way out, I got no way to get in.â Skizz sighed and then looked at his watch. âAnd Impulse doesnât get home for another two hours. Which means Iâm stuck out here.â
Gem hummed, looking up at the lock on the door. Maybe Skizz wasnât as stuck as he thought. âActually, I think I can help!â Gem exclaimed with a grin. Skizz blinked, tilting his head.
âOh?â Skizz asked and Gem nodded.
âYep. Here, pick me up and Iâll show you.â Gem said.
Skizz froze at her suggestion. Had he heard her right? âYou want me toâŚpick you up? Are you sure?â
âIâŚoh.â Gem paused, realizing what she had just asked Skizz to do. At this point in time, Gem still hadnât been picked up or held at all, by either Impulse or Skizz. Gem was usually very adamant that she didnât need the help, preferring to climb and get places her own way. The fact that she had asked Skizz to pick her up without even thinking about it was weird.
WellâŚmaybe not so weird. She did trust him after all. Though she was nervous about being held, Grian had done it and was fine. Of course he was. And the more Gem thought about it, the more okay she was with Skizz picking her up. Besides, if she wanted to help him, she needed a way up there.
âIâm sure.â Gem said after a moment, not a hint of hesitation in her tone.Â

This is part 2 to Grit from day 6! I really love how this came out and I would be very down to write more in this AU in the future. Especially if you guys want it! So I hope you enjoy!
Grianâs brain might still have been foggy from sickness, but that didnât mean he was an idiot. Gem had come to him suddenly a couple of days ago with medicine of all things. Not only that, but apparently at the right amount needed not to kill him. He tried to question her then but both Gem and his sickness wouldnât let him. So he just took the medicine and fell asleep.
He was finally starting to get better. His fever had broken yesterday and his throat wasnât as sore. He was still sick, of course, but he no longer thought he was going to die.Â
But Grian wasnât an idiot and the fact that Gem was leading him through the walls while he was still sick was pulling big red flags for him. Gem refused to tell him where they were going, just that it would help him to make sure he would make a full recovery.
He wasnât sure how Gem could promise that but when he thought about it he kept feeling this pit of dread in his stomach.
If he wasnât still sick, he might have been able to figure it out. But as it was, his mind was still foggy and he was much too tired to think that hard.Â
He was pulled out of the walls, Gem not letting go off his hand the whole time. They were underneath the couch in the living room and Grian blinked slowly as he took in his surroundings. âWaitâŚarenât the humans home?â Grian asked, trying to think through the thick fog. He was pretty sure it was late enough in the day that both humans were home from work but still early enough where they were awake. âWhat are we doing?â
Gem shushed him gently and Grian frowned. âJust trust me on this Grian, please.â Gem all but pleaded with him. Before Grian could answer her in turn, he was once again pulled along as Gem pulled them out from underneath the couch.
Grian blinked. This was wrong. âGem, we shouldnât be here.â He whispered, glancing around the room.Â
âTrust me.â She said again and Grian was getting tired of Gem not saying anything else. She then turned toward the expanse of the room and did the one thing Grian absolutely was not expecting. She yelled. âImpulse! Skizz!â
Suddenly, the floor below them started to shake, in the way that it did when humans were walking. Grianâs eyes widened as two humans rounded the corner. He felt frozen for only a moment before he tugged on Gemâs hand and tried to run back toward the couch. Back toward the safety of the walls.
But Gem didnât budge, her hand only tightening its hold around his and now Grian was really starting to question everything.Â
âHey GemâŚoh, is that Grian?â The one wearing a yellow I on his shirt said. Grianâs mind went blank, more than it had been lately. The humansâ knew their names. The humansâ knew their names. He turned to Gem but she didnât seem surprised by this at all.
Grianâs eyes widened even more when Gem answered back. âYeah, heâs feeling a lot better but heâs still a bit out of it. I figured now would be a good time for you guys to check on him though.â Gem said. At her words, the two humans kneeled down, so close they could reach out and grab them. Grian continued to pull on Gemâs hand, trying to pull them to safety, but she stayed firm.
The other human, the one with scars all over his arms, furrowed his brows. âUh, Gemstone, he looksâŚterrified.â
Gem bit her lip and in turn squeezed Grianâs hand even tighter. âIâŚdidnât exactly tell him about all of this.â Gem admitted.
âWell no wonder then.â The same human said, wincing.
âHe wouldnât have come if I did say anything. This was the only way. We need to make sure heâs going to be okay.â Gem said and then turned to Grian. He noticed the bit of guilt in her eyes but it was outshined by her determination and worry. âGrian, I promise you, theyâre good. Okay? They were the ones who gave me the medicine that helped you.â
It took Grian a moment to connect all the dots, to follow along with their conversation. But when he did, he was horrified. âYouâŚyouâve spoken to them before? You revealed yourself?â
Gem hesitated for only a moment before nodding. âI did it for you. I couldnât just sit back and watch you die. Not when there was another option.â
âThe other option is death for both of us! Or-Or becoming some humansâ pets.â Grian exclaimed, not understanding how Gem could do this. âDid you even stop to think that there are two of them and two of us? Theyâve got one for each of them now!â Grian threw his hands up, though since Gem was still holding on to one, he ended up lifting her hand up as well.
Gem glared at him. âI would rather become a pet then have to sit back and watch you die!â She pulled their arms back down, tears filling her eyes. âI canât lose you, Grian. If that meant sacrificing myself so you could have medicine then I was prepared to hand myself over.â
A throat being cleared pulled their attention away from each other and up toward the humans. There was definitely a mix of emotions going through the two of them. A mix of feeling awkward and sad and horrified were the ones Grian could make out. Which confused him.
âHey now, uh, none of that is going to happen.â The one wearing the yellow I said, putting his hands up. âYouâre not going to beâŚour-our pets.â He winced as he said it, sounding awkward.
âYeah! We really do just want to help.â The other one chimed in.
Gem felt her cheeks heat up, forgetting for a moment that they were there. âI-I know that.â She turned back to Grian. âI do know. Iâve been coming back the last couple of days while youâve been recovering to keep them updated and talk with them.â Her eyes softened. âTheyâre good. I promise.â
Grian didnât even know what to do with the information that Gem had been talking with these humans for multiple days now. It went against everything they were ever taught as borrowers. He still felt like running away and cowering in fear. But the earnest look in Gemâs eyes made him pause.
âIâŚI donât knowâŚâ Grian said, closing his eyes and hanging his head. He really was at a loss for what to do.
âMaybe it would be better if we introduced ourselves?â One of them said and Grian opened his eyes and looked up to meet the humanâs. The human smiled. âIâm Skizz. And this is my buddy Impulse.â He wrapped a hand around Impulseâs shoulder, giving him a side hug. âGemstone here came to us a few days ago and asked for our help and we couldnât just not.â
âWhy?â Grian asked, speaking to them for the first time.
âBecause weâre not the kind of people to turn someone away in need.â Impulse explained, eyes soft.
Grian still didnât fully trust them. âOr because you wanted the chance to grab the both of us.â
Impulse tilted his head. âWell, if that was the case. Why havenât we done it already?â
Grian blinked, not expecting that. âWhat?â
âWe could just grab you right now, you couldnât stop us.â Impulse shrugged but his face revealed his true emotions. He didnât like what he was saying but he knew he needed to say it. âSo why havenât we done it already?â
GrianâŚdidnât know what to say to that. His head hurt and not just from whatever remained of his sickness. It was true though. They were here, out in the open. There was nothing stopping the two humans from grabbing them and trapping them. But theyâŚwerenât. And Grian had a feeling, that if he managed to get out of Gemâs grip and run back to the walls, they wouldnât stop him then either.
âSee?â Gem said and Grian focused back on her. âThey had a lot of opportunities to grab even just me. But they never even reached toward me. Not even the first time I showed myself.â She grabbed Grianâs other hand and fully turned him toward her. âSo please, let them look you over? Just so we know the medicine is working.â
Grian searched Gemâs eyes before hanging his head and sighing. â...Fine.â
âThank you.â Gem said, eyes shining.
âGreat!â Skizz said, smiling. âWe should probably move this to the table then.â Gem nodded and then both humans stood up. Grian tried not to look, turning away. He noticed Gem doing the same. It seemed, despite her trust in them, it was still hard getting rid of certain fears.
The two humans started to head toward the couch so they could sit and Gem followed far behind, pulling Grian along to head over to the coffee table.
But as they started to walk, the dizziness hit Grian again suddenly. He groaned and placed his free hand on his head, trying to stop the room from spinning. Gem stopped and looked at him in concern. âGrian? Are you okay?â
He shook his head, not feeling up to lying right now. His mind had cleared when he had had that freak out over the humans knowing about him. But now that things had settled and Grian was calmer again, the fogginess and dizziness had seemed to come back tenfold.
He was vaguely aware the humans had come back over, kneeling again to see what was happening. âShould we do this another time?â Skizz asked, looking at Grian in concern.
Grian, surprisingly, was the one to shake his head. âWeâve already come this far.â He said, after taking a breath. âAnd-And I donât want Gem to be as worried anymore. I justâŚI donât think I can climb like this.â
âWellâŚâ Impulse started, biting his lip. âYou donâtâŚhave to?â
Grian blinked, brain too foggy to process things well again. But Gem seemed to pick up on what Impulse meant. âI donât know if thatâs a good idea.â
âWhat?â Grian asked, wanting them to speak clearly.
âI could pick you up?â Impulse said. âAnd then bring you over to the coffee table.â
âOh.â Grian said, now understanding. Gem looked just as nervous as Grian felt at that. But Grian was still thinking about it. â...Okay.â
Gemâs eyes widened. âWhoa, are you sure?â
Grian shrugged. He wasnât really. âNo, but you said you trusted them, right?â Gem nodded despite still looking nervous. âThen if Iâm going through with this, which I want to for you, then I guess this is what weâll have to do.â
He took a few shaky steps forward, toward Impulse and Skizz, Gem finally releasing his hand. He stood tall despite the dizziness hitting him hard and nodded at them. Impulse blinked, not really expecting Grian to agree. âOh, uh, okay. Right, letâs seeâŚâ Impulse sounded just as nervous as Grian felt, which actually put him at ease a bit.
Impulse reached a hand out and Grian braced himself. But instead of being grabbed, Impulse placed his hand down, palm up, in front of Grian. Grian blinked at the offer. âHop on whenever youâre ready.â Impulse said.
Grian stared at the hand for a good few moments before taking in a deep breath and stepping on. It felt weird. The surface was firm, squishy, and soft all at the same time. He made his way to the middle but didnât really want to stay standing, so he plopped himself down into a seated position.
When Impulse was sure Grian was secure, he slowly lifted his hand up, standing as he did so. Grian closed his eyes at the feeling, only opening them again when Impulse stopped moving up. âYou okay?â He asked and Grian nodded.
âUh, did you want a lift too?â He heard Skizz ask Gem.
âNo, but thank you Skizz.â Gem answered, still sounding nervous.
Impulse went over and sat down on the couch and then carefully lowered his hand and placed it on the coffee table. Despite the ride not being that bad, Grian still wasted no time in getting off the hand.
Skizz took a seat next to Impulse and Gem was not far behind, coming up and over the edge of the coffee table only a few minutes after Grian was set down.
As Impulse and Skizz set up, which included opening up google on their phones and searching some things, Gem came up next to him and gently bumped him with her arm. He looked over at her and she smiled. âThank you for letting them do this.â
âYeah, yeah.â Grian said, though he sent her a small smile. âNext time though, please tell me whatâs going on ahead of time. I donât think my heart can take another surprise like this.â
Gem hummed and grinned. âNo promises.â
Grian snorted but he had expected that. He knew they still had a lot to talk about once they were back in the walls. But for now, Grian decided to put his trust in Gem and these humans. After all, it was thanks to the three of them that he was here in the first place.
He leaned against Gem and closed his eyes as he waited to be checked over.
Maybe the humans knowing about them wasnât such a bad thing after all.
