Just found the coolest resource, timemaps.com
It's a map of the world, with a timeline at the bottom running from 3500 B.C.E. to 2005 C.E. From the world atlas, you can look at any continent and either stay on the continent's big picture, zoom in on a specific area/civilization to learn more about them, or zoom in again to learn more about individual cities. It's amazing.
The novel I'm currently working on is an alternate universe, first major divergence from our history in 500 C.E., set around 1500 C.E., so this is an excellent resource for tracking what's going on around the world. Like, I now know who lived in the area, what they ate, how they were able to outfight or outlast their competition, etc. and that's exactly the starting point I need to jump off my alternate world.

Timemaps, by Vincent Meertens, take an interesting look at tthe way we categorize destinations. Instead of organzing places by their distance, Meertens instead chose to show destinations their distance. Beautiful work.
TIMEMAPS visualizes how the map of the Netherlands would look if it would be scaled proportionally to the travel times (by train) between cities. Arjan Scherpenisse was asked by the designer of the concept, Vincent Meertens of graphsic, to transform his manually crafted PDF files into a real-time, interactive visualization. TIMEMAPS has been exhibited at the Graduation Show event during the Dutch Design Week 2011.
