Many people think you can transcend the self by suppressing the fear of death. This makes you think that the ego as a "mourner" is unnecessary. Another dead end.

It is not that eliminating fear of death would abolish the self. It is that the self is partly organized around death-avoidance, so reducing existential panic can reduce some of its most frantic expressions. But complete absence of death-related fear is neither attainable nor desirable for a living organism. Total indifference to death correlates not with enlightenment but with pathology or terminal withdrawal. No one you know is free of this mechanism because no viable human is.

You cannot get rid of the self, but you can change how loudly it speaks and what it is recruited for. You can reduce narrative inflation. You can avoid unnecessary theatricality. You can stop mistaking quiet states for ontological breakthroughs. And you can stop expecting a biological tool to disappear while you continue to use it. It's hilarious.
