TS3 – A New Technology for Efficient Timber Structures
Abstract
Until today, all known timber building systems allow only slabs with a uniaxial load bearing action. In the framework of a large research project a new timber slab system has been developed and already tested in first real applications. The developed slab system is designed for housing, commercial and industrial buildings. The slab system works as a flat slab carrying vertical loads biaxial and consists of timber slab elements like CLT glued together on site with a high performing butt-joint bonding technology. This technology was called Timber structures 3.0 (TS3). Several research and tests about the performance of the different slab elements and the butt-joint bonding have been performed. First structures have been built and proof the system.

Row, row, row yer boat... all the way to school?
NLÉ architects have designed this floating prototype for the coastal water community of Makoko, located on the lagoon edge of Lagos in Nigeria.
Made from plastic barrels and locally sourced bamboo, the prototype is primarily used as a school. It provides a solution for the area's lack of buildable land in an area prone to severe climate change, flooding and land reclamation.
The pitched roof shelters from the elements, while the structure's low centre of gravity ensures the design remains balanced on the water, even in high winds.
It is easily extendable and can be adapted for multiple uses, such as a health clinic, market or living space.
The tiered structure has three levels, accessible via a timber ladder. The first level is an open area for play; the second an enclosed space for up to four classrooms, accommodating one hundred pupils; and the top, a semi-enclosed workshop space.
NLÉ built the prototype in collaboration with the Makoko Waterfront Community.
Community architecture at its most innovative.
And buoyant!
