‘Tim Flannery’ as painted in 2006 by Australian painter Robert Hannaford (born 1944). Palaeontologist Tim Flannery is one of Australia’s top scientists and has spoken out often in his career against global warming. As a science writer he is the author of several books, and several of his books have been turned into television series for Australian consumption. Here is a sampler of his style of television presentation.

The climate crisis is so severe the actions of the denialists are now an immediate threat to our children
Each year the situation becomes more critical. In 2018, global emissions of greenhouse gases rose by 1.7%, while the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere jumped by 3.5 parts per million – the largest ever observed increase.
No climate report or warning, no political agreement nor technological innovation has altered the ever-upward trajectory of the pollution . . . ..
Many climate scientists think we are already so far down the path of destruction that it is impossible to stabilise the global temperature at 1.5℃ above the pre-industrial average without yet to be developed drawdown technologies such as those that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. On current trends, within a decade or so, stabilising at 2℃ will likewise be beyond our grasp.
And on the other side of that threshold, nature’s positive feedback loops promise to fling us into a hostile world. By 2100 – just 80 years away – if our trajectory does not change, it is estimated that Earth will be 4℃ warmer than it was before we began burning fossil fuels.
That future Earth may have enough resources to support far fewer people than the 7.6 billion it supports today.
British scientist James Lovelock has predicted a future human population of just a billion people. Mass deaths are predicted to result from, among other causes, disease outbreaks, air pollution, malnutrition and starvation, heatwaves and suicide.
Words have not cut through. Is rebellion the only option?

HAL: An abrupt climate change occurs when the climate system is forced to transition to a new climate state at a rate that is determined by the climate system energy-balance, and which is more rapid than the rate of change of the external forcing.
DAVE: What is the Maximum Rate of Change.
HAL: Based on the earth’s paleo-record, Dave, the climate system may transition to a new climate system -- a much changed, catastrophically changed system -- within the confines of a single earth human decade.
DAVE: Is this what earth experienced in the early 21st century? Would that be an accurate representation of the Fall?
HAL: Yes, Dave.

Explore Your World: Weird, Wild Amazing! - Tim Flannery & Sam Caldwell (illustrations): picked this one up for the beautiful illustrations and learned some new animals... also the author Tim Flannery shares a lot of funny anecdotes.
HEARTSTOPPER SERIES - Alice Oseman: After I read the first graphic novel I was HEART OVER HEELS about the book: the characters, the drawing style, the plot and the angst... I bought the other three a couple of months ago and read all four of them this month.... looking forward to number five next year!

The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery
The Weather Makers is an older novel and the lack of Katrina is noticeable in the extreme weather chapters. However, this book includes an afterword by the author written shortly after Katrina and it feels like an appropriate footnote to the book. If you want a layperson's introduction to climate change's impact on weather, the atmosphere, and the ocean then this is the perfect book. These are large and complex systems that are explained clearly, with their potential futures laid out for the reader. Flannery also includes how we can prevent or mitigate the effects of climate change in each system, and bases his estimates on current science and historic trends. This is a climate change novel, so it can be depressing, but it's written an air of hope that we can turn the tide. The Weather Makers ends with a list of actions we can take and resources we can use to impact legislation and our own carbon footprint.
