#mermay Day 3: nā me aloha, or as known in English as ‘I love you!’ So why did I chose this for my merms today? Fun fact: The traditional Hawaiian flower lei, signifies love! In a wedding ceremony, they’re almost as important as the rings! There’s usually a lei exchange between bride and groom at the beginning of the ceremony, along with an explanation of its significance. Also the bride usually wears a flower garland instead of a veil! So keeping that in mind, the whole premise of a wedding are cause someone started off with the words ‘I love you’ at one point in time. #mermay day 9: E hīmeni, which means to sing! I did a little research and out of the very little information I found on Hawaii and mermaid stories, one I read had to do with a mermaid who fell in love with a sailor, and he fell in love with her but they couldn’t be together due to his position as a sailor and her being Merfolk. So every night he was at sea, she would swim to him and sing. And when they were apart, she would sing the saddest , most beautiful song anyone had heard. And one day, the sailor didn’t return so it’s said this song of hers continues to this very day.
