Stop using JPEGs.

Just stop.

JPEG is a lossy compression format, which means that each time you open and resave your JPEGs the image quality degrades.

For print (and for archival purposes) you want to be saving your files as 300dpi, flattened, CMYK, LZW compressed TIFFs.

LZW compression is a lossless compression format, which means that you can save and resave as many times as you want without degrading the image quality.

This will give you the highest possible image quality at the lowest possible file size while maintaining that quality.

And, yes, this counts for webcomics too. Obviously, you probably want to use JPEGs when you’re posting your strip to the web, but if you ever want to reformat it, or you one day find you want to print it, you need to make sure your master files are properly formatted to allow you to do that.

Several times I’ve had to prepress a book that’s previously only been available online only to be told that they only have JPEGs. I’m good at my job so it usually works out fine, but the first thing I do is save those files as TIFFs so that anything else I do to them won’t degrade the artwork any further.

JPEGs are for uploading to the web ONLY. Not for print. Not for archiving your files.
