A map of Tientsin (Tianjin) from 1899, just before the Battle of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. Foreigners, concentrated in the cluster of settlements on the right side of the map, had come under attack from “Boxers,” who were angry at imperialism in China. American, Russian, British, French, and Japanese soldiers (among others) attacked the walled city to rescue the foreigners. Tientsin was the bloodiest battle of the Boxer Rebellion. The foreign victory allowed them to make their way to Beijing, which they would occupy as well.

Imperial German Model 1889 sword and scabbard. The grip is brown bakelite held to the tang by two steel rivets and has an oval steel pommel.
