I know it isnât Wednesday yet, but making maps can be helpful :3
(This map is from my WIP spring book 2020.)
If you want to built a working civilization, map making can help you a great deal. And you might notice some snafus; your character walking over 500 km in one day.
Take a look at where you place your capital or what you have chosen or want to be near your capital. When there are a lot of people living in a small area, almost all of the cityâs food comes from outside. Of course there will be some self-sufficiency (you might get chances to write about cute rooftop gardens and flower boxes, if you find that useful and important fun) but mainly all of the resources come from the surroundings.Â
There is going to be fields for growing crops. And forests to get supplies for buildings and the forest area often serves as a place for the residential area to grow towards. There might be some wasteland, less industrial grounds or areas in their natural states surrounding you capitals nearest fields and forests (savanna, steppe, prairie). And when you go further into the extremities you might find vegetation zones like tundra and desert.Â
First sketch out your state/ what ever and draw rivers and lakes. If you take a look at our history you notice that humans have often settled near water, so villages near rivers are very common.Â
Then add things which make traveling from town to town hard (for ex. mountains, swamps, inland sea, cliffs...) and have your roads going around those. There might be those interesting less traveled roads going through for ex. swamps or dangerous bay sides which are rumoured to have graves waiting for anyone who dares to try and go through that way.
Now you have towns, roads and landmarks. It it time to start cutting up your land into vegetation zones, you donât have to make actual lines, cartographic symbols will do just fine! Consult your geography book on this for more info (how deserts are born, etc) geography isnât my strongest suit.Â
I know that not everybody hypes about biology and chemistry every chance they get, and if you donât get joy from it or having an accurate ecosystem in every setting is not important to your WIP, then you donât need to worry about it. After all, writing is about having fun and creating stuff that interest you. :)
About my map: this is the first draft so it will change. I want to make one of those magnifier boxes from the view of my capitalâs city center since an amphitheater
which is in there will be a recurring motif. At the lower right you see my version of the compass.
The stateâs dark outline also marks the edge of the world. I have marked two of the general cave tunnels used by the public and one underground residential area which has three major towns and a ground water âpondâ. I need to consult my geography book on that, since that doesnât seem like a safe place to live... I havenât yet inked in these underground markings.Â
