Night Beds, a solo singer/songwriter who recently pooped up on my Spotify again

The first song i heard from him is called “Tide Teeth”. I was drawn in by the simplicity of the opening and his soothing vocals. This man has a voice that I actively look for in artists, but is not obvious right off the bat. The first verse sounds reserved, the slow tempo and echo effects on the drums and vocals build a very airy and distant vibe. I’ve always loved songs like this and needless to say I was hooked right away. As the song continues, you can tell that its starting to work towards something. A solid bass rhythm sneaks its way in, and by the half way point the song picks up considerably. The reserve that accompanied his vocals in the beginning disappears as he belts out the longer notes over a much thicker backdrop of drums and bass. Im a total sucker for songs with transitions like this and by the end I was completely in love.

i listened to his second newest single, “Me Liquor and Gold”, just last week, and it was exactly what i was expecting in the best way. After a brief introduction with a somewhat abrupt transitions, his vocals jump in, lacking the same reservation they held in the first half of tide teeth. The first verse had me listening intently right off the bat with the gentle melody and simplistic yet ever present percussion. The transition to the chorus is short and sweet, with the vocals reaching out a bit more over the repeated song title in the lyrics. The song itself is simple, following a relatively cut and dry format, but the musicality of it is what really kept me. The melody, however simple, never loses the feeling of yearning that is developed further by the lyrics. 

But perhaps what has me the most obsessed with Night Beds right now is his 2013 album “Country Sleep”, which luckily is not country music. 

I began listening to “Cheery Blossoms”, the most popular song off the album on Spotify, and I was not expecting to hear guitar before anything else. He enters shortly after, singing in a lower vocal range than in his newer songs. At this point there was very little comparison to be drawn between this songs and his new singles, which had me pleasantly surprised. Every artist changes their sound at some point, but not all artists are very good at it. Night Beds has an exciting new sound, but will probably be remembered for his calming, raw, light rock-esque sound for quite a while.
